In the wake of the steepest drop in tax collections in nearly half a century, governors and legislators are wrestling with slashing services and hiking taxes.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- New York's governor unveiled a painful budget plan Tuesday that slashes services, raises fees and takes some unusual steps to close a yawning $7.4 billion fiscal gap.
In his fiscal 2011 budget, Gov. David Paterson proposes cutting billions from school aid and state agencies, as well as closing four prisons, legalizing ultimate fighting and increasing taxes and fees by $1 billion.
Among the suggested tax measures: $1 more for cigarettes and a penny per ounce for sugary drinks. Also, ultimate fighting could finally come to the Empire State -- and bring with it an estimated $2.1 million in tax revenue.
"We can no longer afford the spending addiction we've had for so long," Paterson said. "Nobody wants to make these cuts. They will be difficult. They will be painful. They will affect the lives of our citizens. But they are necessary."
ISN'T THE RECESSION OVER????????????????????????????????????????
If we are not spending....we have no economy. Government is the biggest consumer in America consuming over $6.5 trillion worth of goods and services per year. Cities, Counties, and States are a big part of that consumption.
The problem is we as citizens can no longer afford to support the government habbit..... and as a result massive cuts are being made. Hospitals are turning away patients. Mental institutions are closing throwing residents on the streets causing stress on Police departments. Schools, Colleges, and Universities are making big cuts. Services are being slashed regardless of priority.
We are simply running out of money as the Zombulator travels across the nation draining our money supply. You have been warned. You knew in 9.09. You began to Feel after 11.10.9.....and now it happens after 1.01.10.
America is systematically shutting down at an ever accelerating rate...........those jobs that are being lost are not being recreated in other industries.....our laborforce is shrinking despite the fact our population is growing.....
And that finanical guru Benny The B's zombulation policies are sucking our nation's money supply dry. Don't let that Ivy League degreee fool you, if we ain't lending, we can't be spending......and if we ain't spending.......in a highly leveraged consumer based domestic economy......we are shutting down.
It is not too hard to see......just a bit difficult to accept this is happening......and really so few are aware.
