Fat Cats

February 28, 2007 – Comments (2)

Ok, this isn't some diatribe on CEO pay or anything like that. It's literally about fat cats. Mine. And how they're getting too heavy for me to single handedly get them down the four flights of stairs from my fourth floor apartment to the safe ground below in case of fire or other such emergency. I found out firsthand the difficulties last Sunday when my apartment building had a fire alarm go off (false alarm, thankfully, although lugging fat cats left me sore for a couple days afterwards).   [more]

Book It

February 21, 2007 – Comments (0)

Ran across something interesting on iTunes tonight when I was busy there spending money on an album I had on vinyl long ago (LOL). I was looking through the podcasts and saw a section called Podiobooks. Apparently these are free and often read by the author. It says that if you make a donation the author receives at least half of all contributions (not sure who gets the other portion, I guess the publisher?).   [more]

Whoa...

February 19, 2007 – Comments (2)

XM and Sirius to merge, confirmation just came through from WSJ (earlier rumors were citing "people familiar with the matter," and I tend to really have a hard time with those mysterious "people familiar with the matter")... It's funny how something that's ultimately not surprising can be so shocking when you first hear the news. Kind of like the tragic demise of Anna Nicole -- dying so young was a shocker, but on further thought, well... not so much.   [more]

Dumb Things

February 18, 2007 – Comments (1)

I was reading Business 2.0's January/February issue, which happened to contain their annual "101 Dumbest Moments" in business. I always enjoy reading lists like that, but kind of dread whether any of the stocks I own are featured.   [more]

Bare Necessities?

February 16, 2007 – Comments (6)

I put a short on Bare Escentuals in CAPS, in large part because I just wasn't sure what the competitive sustainable advantage is. True, it seems to be a popular product so far with a good premise (that it's good for your skin because it's made of minerals). However, having been a woman for almost 37 years I've noticed hot cosmetics come and go. It seems to me there are few that really command loyalty (I'd argue maybe something like Clinique has showed great staying power).  [more]

Starbucks' Venti Hearts & Flowers

February 07, 2007 – Comments (0)

Ever since Starbucks said it was going to start providing more gift merchandise I've been checking out what they've got going on there. I admit, I bought some Christmas gifts at Starbucks in December... I really dug a lot of their holiday mugs, and who can't use coffee and treats?. (And I got a mug for myself on -- gulp -- sale.) Some of the stuff, I wasn't so sure about... like the clearly Starbucks-branded snow globe ornament... not too sure how that kind of thing might go over, but who knows. Maybe it was a hit. All I know is as a shareholder I'd like to check things out hoping that the merchandise seems appealing and won't have to suffer the dread MARKDOWN!   [more]

The Blockbuster Blues

February 06, 2007 – Comments (0)

OK, I'd love to hear some bullish comments on Blockbuster. Looking at my CAPS "underperform" call and watching that stock go... I just can't really say I get it. Every day, I just don't get it. LOL.

What's with Crocs?

February 02, 2007 – Comments (3)

My CROX short in CAPS has been one of my big stinkers as my rating has PLUMMETED over the last couple weeks (and there are admittedly quite a few stinkers in my CAPS portfolio at the moment). However, most mystifying today was a 5.85% increase in CROX price -- to a new 52-week high, no less -- with the only real news I've seen being a licensing deal with Nickelodeon to make shoes featuring SpongeBob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer. Please tell me that's NOT the reason for a 5.85% price boost... but of course the AP has a headline that implies exactly that. (Well, and it also mentioned that an analyst "praised the company's momentum" and raised her price target.)  [more]
