Hayek Pulls a Tolstoy

Remember when Tolstoy's Anna Karenina became a bestseller years ago after Oprah recommended it for her book club? OK, F.A. Hayek's The Road to Serfdom may not be doing quite that well, but apparently sales of the book are taking off. These are achievements that are pretty darn good for a couple of authors who are no longer with us, particularly for Hayek, seeing how he was an economist, right? That's not exactly the kind of reading you'd think would be taking off with an American public that supposedly doesn't even like to read all that much.   [more]

Today I summoned my inner optimist (really, there is one in there) and actually wrote a Weekly Walk of Fame instead of Shame, giving Wal-Mart the honor for the work it has begun on a Sustainability Index. Wal-Mart hasn't traditionally been one of my favorite companies -- I've always thought it could treat its workers better, in just one example of some of my long-standing issues with it -- but to be fair, I have to admit some of its environmental initiatives have been interesting, and this one (though it's still early) is too. And of course, a company with the size and influence Wal-Mart has could actually make a huge difference. So I thought a Walk of Fame was in order on this go round; waste not, want not.   [more]
