I was having a discussion with a friend last night, he is way more in favor of regulation than I am, but admitted there are obvious problems and pitfalls with it; things I like to talk about as huge flaws, like regulatory capture and all kinds of forms of corruption or incompetence that can transpire. He mentioned thinking there needed to be regulators to watch the regulators, which made my head spin. I couldn't agree with that idea even though I understood where he was coming from, but the conversation reminded me of a Wired article I ran across in February: Road Map for Financial Recovery: Radical Transparency Now!   [more]

Green Shoots Intervention Needed?

Maybe I'm pretty close to being one of those perma-bears that I know have been discussed in here lately, but I wrote this yesterday: Green Shoots? Somebody's Smokin' 'Em. I have a feelng the idea of "smoking green shoots" isn't all that original and I'm sorry if other people have made the same joke (probably in here!). But I seriously don't quite get exactly what the green shoots are, or why they're all that compelling. (I am also guilty of helping continue the whole silly "green shoots" metaphor even though I personally kind of despise it.)   [more]

Cynicism

You know it's been a hard week when you find yourself saying, "Well I'm used to being called a cynical self-righteous buffoon, but that other was over the line!" OK, and you know what, I don't find much over the line when it comes to commenting, so I guess something was. I'm going to choose not to talk about that, though, and mention the concept of "cynicism."  [more]
