Is It Just Me Or...

... um, didn't Mark Hurd kind of do something many considered ethically challenged not long ago? I'm wondering if that's getting a little lost in this drama (melodrama?) that's ensuing between Oracle and HP... At any rate, today I wrote: Disgrace Under Pressure: The Hurd Drama. I personally think there's a lot that's weird or even downright disturbing in this whole Hurd hullabaloo, but one point I wanted to make in the piece is it underlines why golden parachutes so often just seem like such an outrageous waste of shareholder money.     [more]

Slashers and Dashers

Last week I covered the IPS report that shows the more jobs are cut, the more CEOs are paid in these difficult times. I posed the idea that maybe shareholders should wonder if something is going wrong rather than something is going right in such cases. Of course I do know that sometimes jobs do need to be cut because of economic reality, but at the same time, it'd be nice if more company leaders would eat their own cooking when it comes to sacrifices needing to be made. And there's also an argument that maybe that's sort of a short-term trick to placate traders and analysts who just immediately assume short-term profitability will be boosted while ignoring the fact that a layoff-happy environment may actually hinder the business over the long term.   [more]
