Another Moneymaking Tip

October 25, 2007 – Comments (1)

My last post explained about the dividend yield and why and how you should pay attention to companies that have it, grow it, and pay it consistently.  This focus has been a consistent moneymaker in my trades over the last few years.  [more]

The King of Ratios

October 25, 2007 – Comments (0)

So I've been playing this stock-picking game with real money for about 2 years now, after a couple of decades of following the market with no dog in the hunt.  I use Fidelity (excellent resources for the investor) and Yahoo! Finance (it's free, but sometimes a touch out of date or opaque) to obtain "the numbers" on stocks.  It's taken me about that long to figure out which ratios mean what, and I'm still working on trying to figure out which ratios go with each sector.  [more]

No there there

October 18, 2007 – Comments (1)

Asked about Oakland, Gertrude Stein famously quipped, "There is no there there."  I like to remember this when evaluating certain highly speculative penny stocks.  The most recent of these to catch my attention is Sulphco; TMFEldrehad ranks many of these in the categories of ethanol and other alternative energies.  [more]

A Rose by Any Other ICON

I was looking at DRYS, the "hot 1-star stock" that it seems everyone (including me, briefly) has been wrong about.  (In my case, I had the mouse hovering over a "buy" order at 15 last year - real money! - and I let something I read on the Internet talk me out of it.)  [more]

Jim Cramer: winning CAPS?

October 16, 2007 – Comments (7)

I took a look at TrackJimCramer, the CAPS page that follows Jim Cramer's picks.  (For those who don't know, Cramer is host of a CNBC show called "Mad Money" where he talks about stocks, sometimes 30 or 40 tickers given a thumbs up or thumbs down per hour.)  [more]

Calling the top

October 04, 2007 – Comments (6)

I'm doing it.  Right now.  This is it.  Dow is 13968, S+P is 1541, Nasdaq is 2731.  Russell 3000 is 893, Wilshire 5000 is 15,541.  [more]

The Tail That WAGs the Dog

October 01, 2007 – Comments (0)

WAG (Walgreen's Corp) is a stock I've written about here before, maybe in my very first or second entry.  It's a large-cap company that owns and operates about 6000 drugstores in the USA, owns 17% of the U.S. prescription business, and is growing aggressively (on track for 7000 stores by 2010.)  I've been long this stock for about a year and a half and it's consistently made earnings, grew pharmacy and front-end comps, and opened stores on track with the overall plan(536 new ones in the last quarter.)  They've since been making some homecare acquisitions; and opening in-store nurse practitioner clinics; initiatives that have not garnered the attention I think they deserve.  [more]
