Found this article from the LA times about people who take a different view on unemployment. I think that its great that some people are using this to "find themselves" and explore different aspects of spirituality. However, I also feel that the downside of this is that they might "find themsleves" in debt or be pushing back retirement. The other major downside I see is that some of these people have probably become an economic burden on friends and family, or worse, on YOU by living off of unemployment checks. [more]

A friend sent me this article about real life super heros; adults, living out their childhood fantasies of being caped crusaders and fighting crime. This may relate to my previous post about the stock market and crime, perhaps these "former employees" turned super heroes are part of the reason that crime rates are not sky rockting up? Apparently, "A lot of [these real life Super Heroes] have gone through a sort of existential crisis and have had to discover who they are...They realize that money is fleeting, it's in fact imaginary." We'll skip the discussion about whether or not money is imaginary, but I think its great (although somewhat dorky) that these people are living out their childhood comic book dreams. Now, if I remember correctly, both Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne were millionaire playboy's and captains of industry, not quite the out of work super hero living in his or her parent's basement. Despite the nerdiness of this, I have to applaud these masked men and women for cleaning up our streets. it takes a lot of...well...uh...lets say "nerve", to stare down a crack dealer, who is probably armed with a gun, while wearing tights and a cape made out of a bedsheet. Most of us have probably seen headlines lately about all kinds of murders. I feel like every day, someone has committed some sort of terrible murder that usually involves sucide, and it would also appear that many of these involve murders of family members. Now, while discussing these headlines with a co-worker, we couldn't help but wonder whether or not stress from a failing economy and rising unemployment were in part behind some of these crimes. Now, being a man of science and putting my faith in good data, I decided to take a look into this matter myself. I also know from those psychology classes I took in college that there is an effect where we may think that something like murders are more prevelant than deaths from other causes because they are more prevelant in the headlines. Simply put, someone who murders their family and then turns the gun on themselves is headline news, the person down the block who dies of diabetes is not. [more]

I'll start by saying that my parents got me an NES for Christmas in 1989, and I have been playing games ever since. I have owned just about all the consoles from then on as well (not to mention PC games too), so I guess you could call me a gamer. [more]
