A play in genetic research

February 28, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: EXEL

I'm fascinated by genetic research and especially the National Geographic Genome project.  I can't get enough of this stuff and here is a company right in the middle of it all: Exelixs ( EXEL) and it's making money at it too.  Their big discovery is XL184 a promising compound for the treatment of oncological cancers

Exelixis Inc. (EXEL) is a leader in the fields of model system genetics and comparative genomics. These fields involve the systematic study of simple organisms, such as fruit flies, nematodes, mice, zebra fish and simple plants, to rapidly and efficiently determine gene function and establish its commercial utility in humans and other commercially important biological systems. The proprietary technologies provide a rapid, efficient and cost-effective way to move beyond DNA sequence data to understand the function of genes and the proteins that they encode.

3 Terrific Growth Stocks

February 26, 2011 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: DTV , CHS , PXD

My definition of growth stocks may be different from yours.  I look for 4 things: increasing sales, increasing earnings, increasing prices and a volume that allows me to get in and out quite easily.  This morning I used Barchart to screen 6000 stocks and came up with these 3 gems,

3 Picks in the Stock Market Game

February 14, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: WFM , TJX , SYK

Twice a year The Foundation for Investor Education holds a Stock Market Game for students across the country.  The students open portfolios on-line and can invest in  a $100,000 simulated portfolio. They have 2 goals over the 10 week competition:  1 - beat the S&P 500 and 2- of course beat all the other schools that have entered.  For several years I've mentored the Senior Economics class at my daughter's Alma Mater - Charlotte Latin.  Mr. Gregory the instructor breaks the class up in teams of 3 and they are  in charge of their own portfolios.

I spend some time exposing the class to all the free websites that they can use to research stocks, we meet in the Library's computer lab to make trades and at the end of the 10 weeks each team makes a report on how they did and what they learned.  I also give them a homework assignment to complete with their parents.  I ask them to watch Jim Cramer's Mad Money and also Fast Money with their parents.  They are to discuss as a family if they think the shows are valid investment advice that could be followed or just a form of "reality show" and just pure entertainment.  Boy do we have a lot of diverse opinions on that assignment.

I try to pick my own portfolio but instead of trading, I buy and hold for the entire 10 week period. Over the next 10 weeks I'll write a series of posts to tell you how the students are doing and how my portfolio is progressing.

Here are my first 3 picks and my reasons for including them in my portfolio:

AON's intergration begins to pay off

February 10, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: AON

Today I added AON Corp (AON) to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio for very positive price trends.

Aon Corporation is a holding company whose operating subsidiaries carry on business in three distinct segments: insurance brokerage and other services; consulting; and insurance underwriting. The Insurance Brokerage and Other Services segment consists of its retail and reinsurance brokerage operations. The Consulting segment provides consulting services including employee benefits, human resources, and change management. Its Insurance Underwriting segment sells life and accident and health insurance, extended warranty, specialty and other insurance products.

Recent Press Release : "The integration of Aon Hewitt is well underway and client reaction has been exceptional," said Greg Case, president and CEO. "Cost savings related to our restructuring programs and operational initiatives are expected to drive significant margin improvement, and our strong cash flow generation provides financial flexibility as demonstrated by the repurchase of $150 million of Aon stock in the quarter."

Technical Analysis:  Recently the stock has been on a tear with 16 new highs and a price appreciation of 13.06% in the last month.  That price trend and a risings Relative Strength Index of 81.31% has earned the stock a 100% Barchart technical buy signal.  The stock trades around 49.62 which is well above its 50 day moving average of 45.10.

Fundamental Analysis:  Wall Street brokerages have published 9 buy and 7 hold recommendations for their clients based on projections for increased revenues and earnings.  Revenues are expected to increase by 10.00% this year and 25.70% next year. Earnings are estimated to increase by 12.10% this year and continue by an increase of 6.00% annually for the next 5 years.

Investor Sentiment:  Over on Motley Fool the CAPS members vote 113 to 19 that the stock will beat the market with the All Stars in agreement by a vote of 44 to 3.

Fool notes that the last 9 articles by Wall Street journalist have all been positive.

In my view the stock has all 3 burners flaming: 1- Recent and consistent positive price appreciation, 2 - Wall Street brokerage analysts endorsement based on a consensus of increases in revenue and earnings, and 3- A wide and positive general investor following.

Put this on on your watch lists.

Public Storage continues to rise

February 08, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: PSA

This morning I added Public Storage (PSA) to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio not only for its recent price movement but also for its very solid balance sheet.

PSA is a fully integrated, self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust that primarily acquires, develops, owns and operates self-storage facilities. The Company's headquarters is located in Glendale, California. Public Storage is America's premier storage company. Over the past three decades, the company has shown consistent growth in the number of properties owned, as well as in the range of services provided.

The company has added properties on a very steady basis and now own over 2,000 properties.  This is not a highly leveraged portfolio.  Debt is only 8% of assets and there is a 24 times interest coverage.  I look for a conservative total return of 10% over the next several years.

The stock hit 17 new highs and appreciated 8.98% in the last month earning it a 96% Barchart technical buy signal.  The Relative Strength Index is 70.67% and climbing.  It trades around 110.96 with a 50 day moving average of 102.39.

Wall Street brokerages have 9 buy and 12 hold reports published for their clients and consider this a good long term income stock.  Sales are projected to increase about 3.20% a year and earnings are also expected to increase by around 3.95% for at least the next 5 years.

Investor sentiment is high and positive with the CAPS members on Motley Fool voting 159 to 86 that the stock will beat the market.

If you are looking for an REIT with very low leverage, an occupancy rate that exceeds 90%, and a 24 times interest coverage, then Public Storage (PSA) might be a nice fit in your portfolio.
