Allergan - AGN- Many uses for Botox

April 28, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: AGN

While I was screening on Barchart for growth stocks having current upward price momentum  Allergan (AGN) came to the top of the lists.  As I read about the company I discovered that they market Botox not as an injective drug to reduce wrinkles but as a treatment for migraine headaches.  I guess if you've got wrinkles you are prone to headaches.  A shift of production facilities to Costa Rica may improve the bottom line.

Allergan, Inc. (AGN)  is also a provider of eye care and specialty pharmaceutical products throughout the world with products in the eye care pharmaceutical, ophthalmic surgical device, over-the-counter contact lens care, movement disorder, and dermatological markets. Its worldwide consolidated revenues are principally generated by prescription and non-prescription pharmaceutical products in the areas of ophthalmology and skin care, neurotoxins, intraocular lenses and other ophthalmic surgical products, and contact lens care products.  [more]

Gildan doesn't sweat growth

April 21, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: GIL

Once in awhile you run across a stock that makes you wonder why you've never heard of it.  I was looking at stocks that have had and are expected to have double digit growth in sales and earnings and are currently having positive price momentum as measured by Barchart technical indicators. I found Gildan Activewear (GIL), a company that has over 60% market share in their niche.  They make the blank tee shirts and sweat shirts that all the other companies use to print on.  The sales, earnings and price appreciation have been great.

Gildan Activewear Inc. (GIL) is a manufacturer and marketer of premium quality branded basic activewear for sale principally into the wholesale imprinted activewear segment of the North American apparel market. The company sells premium quality 100% cotton T-shirts and premium quality sweatshirts, in a variety of weights, sizes, colors and styles, as blanks, which are ultimately decorated with designs and logos for sale to consumers.  [more]

Bed Bath & Beyond -- BBBY

April 21, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: BBBY

It's always nice when a store you like to shop in becomes a success.  Bed Bath and Beyond (BBBY) is that kind of store.  I'm a kitchen gadget freak so I love this store.   I try not to be an impulse shopper but as I wander the store I sometimes find bargains I didn't expect and can't pass up.  Today I can't pass up the stock.  Same store sales are up 7% year over year.  They are on target to add 40 new stores this year and another 40 to 50 next year.  Margin squeezes have been offset by savings in SG&A so I think this looks like a well managed company.  The price is on a roll.

Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) is a nationwide operator of `superstores` selling predominantly better quality domestics merchandise and home furnishings typically found in better department stores. The Company offers a wide assortment of merchandise at everyday low prices that are substantially below regular department store prices and generally comparable to or below department store sale prices. The Company's domestics merchandise line includes items such as bed linens, bath accessories and kitchen textiles, and the company's home furnishings line.  [more]

Is Taxi positioned for the recovery?

April 07, 2011 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: TAXI

This morning while using Barchart to screen for smaller stocks hitting the most frequent new highs I came across the chart of Medallion Financial (TAXI).  I never heard of this company but the business plan is unique.  As the economy recovers travelers will be using taxis, trying to find financing to open new businesses and the general consumer will be buying more toys -- RVs, boats, motorcycles.  If that happens this is a company that will benefit.

Medallion Financial Corp (TAXI), through its subsidiaries, operates as a specialty finance company in the United States. The company engages in originating, acquiring, and servicing loans that finance taxicab medallions and various commercial businesses. It also originates consumer loans for the purchase of recreational vehicles, boats, motorcycles, and trailers, as well as provides other debt, mezzanine, and equity investment capital to companies in various industries. In addition, the company originates commercial loans that finance the purchase of the equipment and related assets necessary to open a new business or the purchase or improvement of an existing business; and loans to small businesses for the purpose of financing inventory and receivables. Further, it raises deposits and conducts other banking activities. Medallion Financial Corp. was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in New York, New York.  [more]

Furniture Brands International in turn-around mode

How about a company that you may not know but you know their products.  Technically, Furniture Brands International (FBN) has everything going for it on Barchart but fundamentally its a speculative pick. Discount Wars - WalMart, Target, TJX

April 06, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: WMT , TGT , TJX

In my area of the country there are 3 stores that seem to go head to head when it comes to the competition in discount retailing.  Each is highly competitive and my paper and mailbox are stuffed with fliers from each.  To have a diversified and balanced portfolio you have to include a discount retailer and it's hard to ignore these 3.  Let's make a head to head comparison in no particular order and pick a winner.  See if you agree with me.

TJX Companies (TJX) is slightly different than the other 2 in that they offer discount name brand clothing and housewares but not food items.

TJX Companies, Inc. (TJX) is an off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the U.S. and worldwide. The company operates T.J. Maxx stores, Marshalls stores, and Winners Apparel Ltd. stores, a Canadian off-price family apparel and home fashions chain. It also operates HomeGoods, a U.S. off-price home fashions chains, and T.K. Ariad Pharmaceuticals (ARIA) is engaged in the discovery and development of novel pharmaceuticals based on intracellular signaling technology. This weekend I was screening for a stock to add to the Barchart Van Meerten Speculative portfolio.  This is a portfolio of stocks trading under $10 that are hitting frequent new highs.  I can across  Exact Sciences (EXAS).

Exact Sciences (EXAS) uses applied genomics to develop effective, patient-friendly screening technologies for use in the detection of cancer. Certain of its technologies have been licensed to Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings for a stool-based DNA screening assay for colorectal cancer in the average-risk population. Colorectal cancer, which is the most deadly cancer among non-smokers, is generally curable if detected early. Despite the availability of colorectal cancer screening and diagnostic tests for more than twenty years, the rate of early detection of colorectal cancer remains low, and deaths from colorectal cancer remain high. The company believes its genomics-based technologies would help to enable detection of colorectal cancer so that more people can be effectively treated.  [more]
