This morning I was screening on Barchart for S&P 500 stocks that continue to hit new highs even when the overall market is down. H J Heinz (HNZ) has hit 13 new highs and is up 6.58% last month in the same period the Value Line Index was down 2.11%. The list of products they sell looks like my grocery shopping list. They have made major acquisitions in the Latin American markets and let's face it the Latin American diet is very tomato based just like ours, so they should do well there. The company has made a major investment in IT to help streamline inventory control and delivery. I'd like the stock on its price momentum alone.
H J Heinz (HNZ) -- and its subsidiaries manufacture and market an extensive line of processed food products throughout the world. The company's principal products include ketchup, condiments and sauces, frozen food, pet food, soups, beans and pasta meals, tuna and other seafood products, infant food and other processed food products. One of the fastest rising S&P 500 stocks these days isSalesforce.com (CRM) which is up 8.75% in the last month vs the Value Line Index which is down 2.04% over the same period. Its interesting that the trading symbol -- CRM -- is an mnemonic for what the company does Customer Relations Management. I found it onBarchart based on its current momentum.

The company's Salesforce suite of on-demand CRM applications allows customers to manage and share all of their sales, support, marketing and partner information on-demand. During this recent market contraction its been hard to find stocks that buck the trend and keep on growing. Barchart helped me findAutoZone (AZO) that has still had 12 new highs and increased in price 4.78% while the general market as measured by the Value Line Index of 1700 stocks is down 2.17% for the same period. As new car sales still are in a slump and the average age of the existing autos get older, repairs with Autozone parts should increase. The momentum has been impressive.
Autozone (AZO) is the nation's leading specialty retailer of automotive parts and accessories, primarily focusing on do-it-yourself customers. Each of the company's auto parts store carries an extensive product line for cars, vans and light trucks, including new and re-manufactured automotive hard parts, maintenance items, and accessories. An S&P 500 company that is generating money like an AMT isAmerican Tower (AMT). The company is seriously considering becoming an REIT and cranking out their cash flow in the form of cash dividends. I found the company looking on Barchart for companies showing current upward price momentum.

I like to start my day reading the Financial Times with my first several cups of coffee. It's a well written paper and you get a very different world wide prospective from across the pond. This morning I learned that O'Bama is Irish and that Krispy Kreme Doughnut (KKD)has expansion plans in Europe. The article said KKD was trying to become a midday coffee destination and would be looking for ways to increase their coffee and hot chocolate sales. While researching the company I found Robert P Stiller, Founder and Chairman of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) recently bought 3.5 million shares which is over a 5% interest in KKD. I'm not that bright but I can connect a few dots on this one. Let's see what everyone else thinks of the stock by looking at the price momentum on Barchart.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. (KKD) is a leading branded specialty retailer of premium quality doughnuts which are made throughout the day in their stores. One of the most consistently rising stocks on the NASDAQ 100 list according to Barchart is Amgen (AMGN) with 15 advances in the last 20 sessions. The company has well established brand drugs like Aranesp, Epogen and Embrel and looks to bring new drugs into the pipeline. My only concern is what health care reform may mean to the whole pharma industry. The momentum recently has been impressive.
Amgen Inc. (AMGN) discovers, develops and delivers innovative human therapeutics. A biotechnology pioneer, Amgen was one of the first companies to realize the new science's promise by bringing safe and effective medicines from lab, to manufacturing plant, to patient. I was surprised to see Hansen's Natural Corp (HANS) near the top of the screen when I was screening on Barchart for high growth stocks having current price momentum. Hansen's is an old name that's been around since the 1930's selling fresh fruit drinks in southern California. Lately I've seen their trucks at a lot of music venues the younger crowd likes giving away their new MONSTER energy drink. Future growth plans include Brasil, Asia and the rest of South America.

I like McDonalds (MCD) as a company and I like Ronald McDonald as a mascot. What is it about the radical left in the US that makes them target success as bad? They hate Wal-Mart because they revolutionized retail and bring you the lowest prices. The hate Google because they have brought to the masses information at your finger tips. They hate the banks because they bring financing to the public and hate Wall Street because public ownership of business is evil.
Lately they claim McDonalds makes kids fat. They want to ban toys in Happy Meals and now they target Ronald as some kind of evil clown out of a Stephen King novel. Get a life.
McDonalds amazes me. I know that an immigrant can be off the boat and the next day make a better hamburger that you can get at Mickey D's but they still sell more than anyone on the planet. They sell more hamburgers, sell more breakfasts, out sell even Starbucks when it comes to coffee and now target smoothie drinks. No matter what food item they take on, in short order they are number 1. Nothing succeeds like success and that is what they do.
I found McDonalds (MCD) when screening on Barchart to find the S&P 500 companies hitting the most frequent new highs in the last month. I'd buy the stock on price momentum alone.
For those of you who don't know: McDonald's Corporation (MCD)develops, operates, franchises and services a worldwide system of restaurants that prepare, assemble, package and sell a limited menu of value-priced foods. I was screening on Barchart for an electric utility with great price momentum and came across XCEL Energy (XEL). When I say a sure thing I mean that the company is rated 100 for both price stability and earning predictability so what you see is what you get with a minimum of surprises. The company has already received a 20 year licence on one of its plants and is soon expected to receive another one on another. They also have been granted new price increases in several other jurisdictions. I like the utility on its price momentum alone.

Even in this weak market Winn-Dixie (WINN) continues to rise. I must give a disclosure that I did work for Winn-Dixie while in high school. I was a stock clerk at the Cordova Road location in Fort Lauderdale. That was over 45 years ago so I guess I'm no longer an insider. That disclosure is part of why WINN is a turn around story (and its not because I'm no longer an employee). They are located in some of the wealthier locations in the South East US and as such haven't been as price sensitive to rising food prices. Their more affluent customers are able to continue their brand loyalty. The price continues to rise.

While screening on Barchart for growth stocks hitting the most frequent new highs Ross Stores (ROST) was near the top of the list this morning. As disposable income increases purse strings will loosen but shoppers will still look for bargains at off price stores like Ross. Ross Stores, Inc. One of the best managed utilities in the southeast in Southern Company (SO) headquartered in Atlanta, GA. I used to be an internal auditor for the company so I got to see that first hand. Southern has always had a very good relationship with the rate regulators and over the years has been able to get justifiable rate increases to help properly fund operations and expansions. Georgia Power its largest subsidiary recent received as timely rate increases and will soon. What brought the stock to my notice was when I was using Barchartto screen for S&P 500 stocks hitting the most frequent highs in the last month. While screening on Barchart for stocks having current upward momentum I can across Bally Technologies (BYI). The stock looks like a turnaround situation. 35% of revenue comes from new gaming equipment and at the present time new casinos aren't coming on line. In a few years as the economy recovers that's where the turnaround may set in. The rest of the revenue stream is from gaming operations and gaming related software and systems, these revenue streams look more stable. Price momentum is why I'm looking at this issue.

Normally I do not like to follow penny stocks (stocks under $5). They are hard to get financial information on and aren't followed by the brokerage firms. There are bottom feeding vultures that like to short penny stocks then bombard the Internet with negative info so the stock tanks then they close their positions before the issue recovers. Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) is an exception. It came up on my Barchartscreener when I was looking for stocks trading over 100K shares and hitting frequent new highs. When I was screening on Barchart for large cap stocks hitting the most frequent new highs it was no surprise to see Proctor & Gamble (PG) near the top of the list. This is a real "what you see is what you get" stock. I respect Value Line's analysis of stocks and have read them for years and this is one of the few stocks they rate 100 for both price stability and earnings predictability. This company is steady as a rock and for income investors it increases its dividend every year without fail. When I read the list of their stable of brand names it is had for me to imagine a supermarket without their products on the shelves. I decided to look at some of the most widely held stocks to see how they're doing. General Electric (GE) is always at the top of that list. The key to success at GE is that it is so big and in so many sectors that it's revenue almost mirrors the whole economy in general. Where it shines is that most of its divisions seem to me managed better than most of their competitors, which equates to the bottom line. The price has enjoyed momentum on Barchart as the economy recovers. The leading divisions are expected to be in consumer products, lending and leasing and of course, the aviation division.

All though cereal sales have been down recently a new pricing scheme by all the cereal makers is expected to fall to the bottom line. GIS has been having difficulty with a distribution agreement for Yoplait but it look like the dispute is about to be settled with a purchase of the company.

When I look for investments in the tech sector my Barchart screener often turns up Oracle (ORCL). Oracle seems to make money not by being an innovator but by implementing sound business practices and smart acquisitions that round out their offerings to customers. Money the old fashion way, they earn it. The stock's recent price momentum is what got my attention.

Lately, when I screen on Barchart for ETF's hitting new highs theComex Gold Trust (IAU) always seems to be on the list. It's gains recently have been impressive.
The iShares COMEX Gold Trust (IAU) seeks to correspond generally, to the day-to-day movement of the price of gold bullion. The objective of the trust is for the value of the iShares to reflect, at any given time, the price of gold owned by the trust at that time, less the trust's expenses and liabilities. The trust is not actively managed. It does not engage in any activities designed to obtain a profit from, or to ameliorate losses caused by, changes in the price of gold. The trust receives gold deposited with it in exchange for the creation of Baskets of iShares, sells gold as necessary to cover the trust expenses and other liabilities and delivers gold in exchange for Baskets of iShares surrendered to it for redemption. I noticed Yahoo (YHOO) when I was screening on Barchart for S&P 500 stocks having positive price momentum. It looks like this might be a turnaround candidate in every way. Competition is high in this sector and Yahoo has to go up against Google, AOL and MSN. Hopefully there is enough of the pie to go around.

Most of my picks are what some people call momentum investing. I do not look for patterns but I do use Barchart to find stocks with upward momentum that deserve to be recognized for their increases in sales and earnings. Techne (TECH) is just such a stock.
