My Recent Picks and Charity Challenge Update

January 31, 2013 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: EPAX , HBIO , CPRT

As we say hello to February, hooray spring will be here before we know it, I wanted to take a few minutes to review the performance of my CAPS portfolio in January.  I know that one month is way too short a time period to have much meaning, but it's fun to look at anyhow plus I can provide an update on the quarterly charity challenge that I committed to.  [more]

It's been sour so far, but the future looks yummy...a follow-up on Dole Foods (DOLE)

January 27, 2013 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: DOLE.DL

As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, as someone who writes about stock ideas here in my blog, I feel an obligation to post updates on how they've done...good and bad.  This is particularly true for higher conviction picks that I have bought with real money.     [more]

After all these years, Vodafone still looks super cheap

January 23, 2013 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: VOD

As a shareholder of Vodafone (VOD), I always keep my eyes open for news on the company.  The stock hasn't been doing particularly well of late, but one famous investor, David Eihnorn, still really likes its prospects.  [more]

Hooray, the Barron's Roundtable is Here

January 20, 2013 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: HSH , XYL , NFG

As I have mentioned in the past, I have always been a huge fan of Barron's semi-annual investment roundtable. The series of articles usually turns up tons of interesting investment ideas that have been proven to outperform the market over time.  I talked about the roundtable pundits' excellent track record in a December blog post that in my opinion is definitely worth reading if you haven't already:  [more]

Get paid a solid dividend while waiting for catalysts to arrive. Pick Update on Rockwood Holdings

January 19, 2013 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ROC

Whenever possible I try to provide updates on my stock ideas, particularly he ones that I personally own with real money.  Today I am revisiting a stock that I bought in real life and in CAPS back in November, Rockwood Holdings.  Hmmmm, I thought that it was longer ago than that, but that's when it was.  Since that date ROC is up a tad under 14% versus a 2.75% gain in the S&P, not too shabby.  And that doesn't even include the 2.6% dividend.  At the time of the pick, I had the following to say about the company:   [more]

REIT conversions are hot, hot, hot

January 18, 2013 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: GEO , LAMR , CORR

I have been extolling the virtues of one type of special situation, REIT conversions, here for a while now.  Basically this is when a normal company that has significant real estate assets applies to convert all or part of its operations into a Real Estate Investment Trust.  Once the conversion is complete, the company or division's dividend usually increases substantially, and its share price follows as well.  [more]

Global Portfolio Candidate #1

January 14, 2013 – Comments (4)

Yesterday I talked a little bit about how I am planning on expanding my portfolio to include stocks listed on non-US exchanges.  The trick of course is to find stocks that are obscure enough or misunderstood nough to be cheap, but...still have enough information out there on them that a foreigner like myself can intelligently decide whether to buy them and keep tabs on them oing forward.  [more]

Increasing the size of the dating pool

January 13, 2013 – Comments (7)

Well after putting it off for a while, I have officially applied for a global trading account from my broker.  I plan in easing into buying stocks on foreign exchanges, starting with Canada and the Toronto exchange first (I already have a potential candidate...more on that later).  I figure that there will be a much smaller learning curve for investing with our northern neighbors than there would be say in investing directly in a non-English speaking country.   From there I may branch out to other English-speaking countries, such as the UK and and Australia.   [more]

CVS is going to have a huge first quarter

January 11, 2013 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: CVS

I'm going to keep this post short, but sweet.  This is an observation that I made while I was waiting for a prescription for my son at CVS.  I have never, ever seen a pharmacy as crowded in my life as CVS has been the three times that I've gone there over the past week or so.  I'm not talking about decent traffic, I'm talking about "Are they giving away free money here?" absolutely, annoyingly PACKED.    [more]

A broken growth stock that pays you to wait for activists to turn things around

January 10, 2013 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: EPAX

Here's another interesting stock that's right up TMF's alley...a former pick of one of the services, Ambassadors Group (EPAX).  There was an interesting SA article on it the other day.  As an aside, i know that many people criticize it, much of the criticism is warranted, but cruising through Seeking Alpha is a great way for me personally to find investment ideas.  I'm all about the story with investments.  if a stock has interesting special situation-esque angle that can unlock value, I'm interested.  I use SA to find interesting stories and then dig into the numbers myself rather than relying on the author of the article to do so.  Trust but verify.  This works really well for me because I like to keep things simple in investing.  If a stock's balance sheet is in good shape, it's cheap by some metrics and even better it pays a dividend that it can easily cover I don't worry about all of the rocket science, calculating DCF out 10 years based upon variables that no one on Earth could possibly know.  As the saying goes, garbage in, garbage out.  All of those fancy calculations don't mean a hill of beans if the assumptions are wrong.  [more]

And the new mystery stock is...

January 07, 2013 – Comments (9) | RELATED TICKERS: CORR

For a week or two now I have been alluding to a mystery stock that I have established an initial position in.  Some have tried to guess it, but to be honest with you it's so obscure that I'm not surprised that no one got it.  It's actually pretty finny, I haven't established a massive position in this one yet because I'm still researching it, but so far it seems like it was almost like it was tailor-made for me.  I'm not saying that it's the perfect stock, but it has all of the attributes that I personally love, a special situation REIT conversion with catalysts and a big dividend that seems to be out of favor at the moment because of a temporary situation...I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats.

This new stock is actually everything that another company that I sniffed around for a while, Power REIT (PW) should be, but isn't (that's another interesting one, but for another day).  [more]

How you can crush the "Income Winners" from this week's Barron's

January 06, 2013 – Comments (5)

Let me begin by saying that I actually like Barron's for the most part.  I wouldn't subscribe to and continue to read it if I hadn't found profitable investment ideas in it in the past.  I can do without the opinion articles, anything they have to say in it about politics, most of the pieces on economics and of course the snooty Penta section, but some pieces particularly the 13D and the interviews with hedge fund and investment managers that contain real ideas are really good.    [more]

The TMFDeej Quarterly Charity Challenge

January 04, 2013 – Comments (13)

Good morning CAPS friends.  I am going to keep this post short, but sweet because I m absolutely swamped with work this week.  I have made a lot of positive changes in my life over the past several years.  One of them is trying to give back more by donating to charity.  I am also trying to involve my two young boys in the process as well.  When I recently won my fantasy football league, I donated a portion of the winnings and I let them pick the charities that I split it amongst.  I think that it was very worthwhile involving them in the process, telling them about how blessed we are to have such a wonderful life and about who we would be helping.  [more]
