The bad news and the good news

February 26, 2009 – Comments (1)

The bad news is that the jobs market is still a mess, but anyone who's here on CAPS probably already knew that.  Weekly jobless claims, the most timely read available on the jobs market other than perhaps the Challenger, Gray & Christmas on announced job cuts, soared to 667,000...a 26-year high.  Continuing claims soared to over 5 million for the first time.    [more]

Time Warner Cable, an interesting CAPS short

February 22, 2009 – Comments (0)

This week's Barron's column by Michael Santoli contained an interesting short idea that I am going to try out in CAPS.  He suggested that the price of Time Warner Cable (TWC) is likely to drop in the coming weeks as Time Warner Cable (TWX) completes the spin-off it the 85% (a whopping 900 million shares) of it that it still owns.  Index funds that have no use for TWC and institutional investors, of whom only 30% of those who own TWX own TWC, are likely to unload the new Cable shares that they receive in the transaction.  [more]

The Forgotten CAPS Player and Funny Cartoons

February 20, 2009 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: IT , K , SU

As someone who visits The Motley Fool and plays CAPS you are probably like myself, a person who works very hard but is not at the very, very top or at the bottom of the economic food chain.  We are the forgotten men and women in this whole mess and it makes me sick.  We work hard, in households who have two full-time working parents...many of whom have multiple jobs, we saved our money and made a decent down payment on a reasonable home, we save for retirement, and unlike many in the new administration we pay our taxes.    [more]

My thoughts on Barron's 20 Best Dividend Plays for 2009

February 15, 2009 – Comments (6)

I'm sort of old school in that I actually like to get a paper copy of Barron's rather than just subscribe to it electronically.  When I walked out to the end of my driveway in my pajamas to pick up my copy of Barron's on Saturday morning the first thing about it that caught my eye was this small teaser at the top of the cover "20 Stocks With Safe Dividends over 4%."  Wow, I thought that's right up my alley.  [more]

An interesting experiment in behavioral economics

February 13, 2009 – Comments (7)

Conventional wisdom amongst many economists, including an non-professional followers of the dismal science such as myself, is that one-time tax payments are much more likely to be saved than spent.  This is certainly what happened last year when the government mailed out lump sum stimulus checks to Americans.  [more]

This woman absolutely disgusts me

February 12, 2009 – Comments (13)

OK, I realize that this is slightly off of the topic of investing...but I couldn't take it any more.  This nutty woman in California who had octuplets absolutely disgusts me.  She should be locked up in jail and so should the doctor who helped her with the process of getting pregnant.  [more]

A humorous look at the stimulus package & Geithner

The stimulus package and the nomination of the tax-dodging Hank Paulson-like Tim Geithner are already jokes, so why not laugh about them while we watch how ineffective they will be:  [more]

Good article, TERRIBLE title

February 11, 2009 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: BP , MO , VOD

This month's issue of Smart Money magazine came in the mail yesterday.  It contained an article on dividend paying stocks that I found extremely interesting, but the title for the article that Smart Money plastered in huge letters on the front of the magazine was absolutely TERRIBLE.  Ready for it?  [more]
