April 30, 2009 – Comments (3)

I've done enough procrastinating today, so I'm signing off but I wanted to share these great political cartoons with everyone before left.  I love these things.  Enjoy!  [more]

The closure of dealerships will be bad for the economy, but not nearly as bad as some fearmongers are making it out to be

April 30, 2009 – Comments (20) | RELATED TICKERS: GM

I recently read an estimate from a fearmonger who believes that 250,000 people will lose their jobs as a result of General Motors and Chrysler dealership closures.  Here's how they arrived at that estimate:  [more]

Insider purchases at lowest level since 1992 / State Pension Problems

April 27, 2009 – Comments (15)

I started to write a post on the common stock of a company that is sitting within shouting distance of its 52 week low, pays a solid 3.5% dividend that is easily covered by its cash flow, that has a great management team, actually might benefit from a slowdown in consumer spending, certainly would benefit from a fall in the U.S. dollar, and that has been a solid performer for decades before I shocked myself and actually pulled the trigger on my first purchase of common stock in months.    [more]

Pension problems will be a major drag on future earnings

April 23, 2009 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: CBS , GM

While most companies have elimintated their pension programs completely, never had one to begin with, or switched to Defined Contribution plans that stipluate the amount of money that they have to put into the retirement fund rather than the payout, a number of older companies still have problematic Defined Benefit pension plans that are severely underfunded.  [more]

For Housing Crisis, the End Probably Isn’t Near

April 22, 2009 – Comments (5)

The NYT, which has some serious financial problems of its own (see article: Times has only $34 million left in bank), published a great piece today on why home prices are likely to continue falling by at least another 15% even though they are close to "fair value" in terms some metrics like their relation to rent and income.  [more]

Soaring U.S. Budget Deficit Will Mean Trillions in Bond Sales

April 22, 2009 – Comments (14)

In my previous post I stated that I believe deflation is more of an immediate threat than inflation...unless the market begins to choke on all of the Treasuries that the U.S. government has to issue to pay for its massive budget deficit at a time when tax receipts are collapsing.  [more]

The March CPI should have been even lower than reported

Inflation will reappear again in the future.  It always does.  It's in the interest of an indebted government for it to exist in the long run.  For now however, inflation isn't even close to being here.  In fact, it could a while before it arrives.  [more]

Five more stocks trading at less than book value

April 16, 2009 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: DOW , DUK , ALL

A couple of days ago, I blogged about NV Energy, a power company that is trading below its book value (see post: Yum, a power company that's trading below book value).  Today I came across a great Bloomberg article by John Dorfman that talks about five more companies, big ones, that are currently trading for less than their book values.  [more]

WARNING, WARNING, The next shoe may be about to drop

April 11, 2009 – Comments (9) | RELATED TICKERS: HOG

We're all screwed, but it's not for the reasons that you'd expect like housing or unemployment...there's a hidden menace out there that's a ticking time bomb.  Eventually it will get us all.  Don't watch this if you don't have your bomb shelters already fully stocked and your money buried in cans in the back yard.  [more]

Harvard & Princeton Professors Bash P-PIMP Plan

April 08, 2009 – Comments (3)

Two well-known ivy league professors, Harvard's Joshua Coval and Erik Stafford and Princeton's Jakub Jurek, published a report yesterday stating that they believe the whole premise behind the government's toxic asset auction program, which I affectionately refer to as P-PIMP, is wrong.    [more]

Why this will not be a normal cyclical recovery

April 07, 2009 – Comments (1)

This weekend, the Financial Times had a great piece written by Roger Altman, the former United States Deputy Treasury Secretary under Bill Clinton.  The piece, titled Why this will not be a normal cyclical recovery, jibes with my thinking on the current recession.  [more]
