Several months ago I read Michael Lewis' latest book The Big Short (it's an excellent read for anyone who's interested in investing). The book contains several story lines that follow a number of the smart investors who figured out early on that the U.S. housing market was going to collapse and profited handsomely from it. [more]

In an article last month called The Gas Station of the Future? I talked about how plug-in electric vehicles will begin to arrive at dealers later this year and wondered aloud what sort of impact they will have upon electricity consumption. Any significant adoption of electric vehicles by the public would be a huge unforeseen boon for power companies. [more]

Here's an odd story that ties together the world of sports and business (two of my favorite things). At halftime of a close game two between the Lakers and Suns last night an unruly fan got in the face of one of the officials, who in turn threw a basketball at him. [more]

Does anyone really think that Goldman Sachs is ever looking out for its clients' best interests? Goldman only cares about Goldman, PERIOD. It would be a cold day in he-two-sticks that I ever took any trading advice from these guys. Take a look at these two recent stories and tell me what's wrong here: [more]

I came across an interesting statement in BusinesWeek magazine (which is much better now that Bloomberg has taken control of it BTW) yesterday. The statement that I am referring to was made by the famous market pundit Jeremy Grantham, who is not a raging bull by any stretch of the imagination. [more]

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) has been in the news quite a bit lately for its recall of children's drugs including Tylenol, Motrin and Benadryl for quality issues. As someone with two small children who have had to consume these products from time to time I was somewhat disturbed by this news, not to mention the fact that I probably had to throw fifty to a hundred bucks worth of the stuff in the trash. I see a lot of posts here on CAPS whining about the corruption that is rampant in our society and how much better things used to be. Here's a few events from history that will put things into perspective. [more]

Ever since reading Joel Greenblatt’s You Can Be a Stock Market Genius several years ago I have been a huge fan of investing in spin-offs. From time to time if I’m trying to procrastinate, I’ll surf around the web looking for information on planned spin-offs. I found one today that has piqued my interest, but it’s a little different than the straight splits of public companies that I normal find. [more]

I have been blasting Moody's (MCO) and Standard & Poors (MHP) for a while now, complaining that they were as responsible as anyone for the financial meltdown yet they have somehow have been able to retain their government-mandated oligopoly status. My MCO short is one of the few CAPS trades that I refuse to close no matter what, as a matter of principle. [more]

I have a dearth of red thumbs in my CAPS portfolio right now, possibly because when I initially returned to playing the game I used my real-life portfolio as starting place. Of course, I soon came to realize that I'll never be able to move back up the CAPS ladder with that few picks so I have been adding to my CAPS port slowly but surely. [more]
