Time to shut down the US Federal Reserve?

June 29, 2010 – Comments (20)

I have been trying to stick to blogging more about specific long and short stock ideas instead of whining about the economy and government lately, but this really got my goat.  It is absolutely astonishing to me how pompous and arrogant the people at the U.S. Federal Reserve are.  For me, the absolute last straw was the release of the minutes from a 2004 Fed meeting where Alan Greenspan was quoted as saying the following:  [more]

Today's Stone Cold Steel Pipe Lock CAPS Short

June 29, 2010 – Comments (28)

To borrow a phrase from ESPN's Mike & Mike in the Morning, I now bring you today's Stone Cold Steel Pipe Lock CAPS short.  I have not come this close to attempting to short a stock with real money since I was unable to borrow shares of Moody's (MCO) around a year ago.  The stock that I am so negative on is Tesla Motors (TSLA).  [more]

June 28, 2010 – Comments (10) | RELATED TICKERS: SNY , NVS , GSK

I have been singnig the virtues of Big Pharma here in CAPS for a while now, as much to my chagrin the companies in the sector continue to get cheaper.  I have been long Pfizer (PFE) in real life ans CAPS and Merck (MRK) in CAPS only for some time.    [more]

Are the stocks of auto companies pricing in the weak consumer demand that we're experiencing?

June 28, 2010 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: F

U.S. auto sales were fairly strong in May.  Most automakers came in ahead of expectations. Unfortunately, as we reach the end of June sales (manufacturers will officially announce their June sales on Thursday, July 1st), everything that I have heard thus far points to a fairly weak month.   [more]

Where there's smoke, there's fire

June 28, 2010 – Comments (11) | RELATED TICKERS: BP

I have received criticism from a few of my fellow CAPS players for convicting BP of gross negligence before there has been a complete investigation of the Horizon accident.  It's fine to hold out hope that the recent accident happened through no fault of the company if you're a current shareholder, but you'd be better off spending your time looking for the Leprechaun's pot 'o gold at the end of the rainbow.  [more]

There's usually lots of Special Situations in the Biotrch sector

June 24, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: ENZN

As I have said numerous times in the past, biotech definitely is not my area of expertise. Having said that, the complexity of biotechs and their propensity to wind themselves down aka liquidate when things aren't going well, sell their research in exchange for a revenue stream, horde cash because they burn through it so quickly, and the uncertainty surrounding whether or not a drug will be approved...or even work the way it is supposed to seem to often lead to interesting investment opportunities in the sector.

The other day I added shares of a super cheap biotech company called Enzon Pharma (ENZN) to my CAPS portfolio at $11.01/share. Here's why.  [more]

The Rich Get Richer...without using any skills whatsoever

June 24, 2010 – Comments (8)

My company's office building is in an affluent area.  A number of small hedge funds have offices there as well. I have a tremendous amount of respect for most of them...the quant funds that develop their own formulas in an attempt to beat the market or the smart stock pickets, even the intuitive traders.    [more]

Is the "President's utility" destined for a 30% pop later this year?

June 23, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: EXC

Despite the fact that Cap and Trade legislation has already been passed by Congress, it appears to have stalled out in the Senate.  This does not mean that the issue is completely dead.  The government will likely attempt to utilize the public outrage associated with the recent Gulf spill to aid it in its attempt to pass some sort of climate bill.  According to an article in last week's Wall Street Journal, White House to Talk Range of Energy Ideas.  The current Administration now seems willing to consider backing a a watered-down version of the original bill that affects only power companies to get something through the Senate.   In the article, the White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is quoted as saying the following on the subject “The idea of a ‘utilities only’ [approach] will also be welcomed...”  [more]

BP was on Roids

June 23, 2010 – Comments (8) | RELATED TICKERS: BP

Obviously there has been a lot of talk about BP lately.  Many people, including myself at first, looked at this situation as being black or white...either the company will bankrupt or it will survive and yield incredible returns for investors because it is such a tremendously profitable cash cow.  As I flipped on CNBC this morning and once again saw the live feed of the disgusting leak in the bottom corner of the screen I thought of another less talked about possibility.  [more]

Why a company would intentionally underreport earnings...

June 10, 2010 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: HLX

Management who feel secure in their positions can use all sorts of non-cash tricks and trinkets to lower their company's reported earnings.  Why on Earth would a company's executives, who are constantly under pressure from shareholders to increase earnings, intentionally try to make their company's earnings look bad?  Management can kill two birds with one stone by making this sort of move.  [more]
