Why I prefer value to growth

July 30, 2010 – Comments (15)

I always have a lot of time to think on my morning commute into work.  Today I started thinking about why I invest the way I do.  I wondered to myself why I so strongly prefer value stocks over growth stocks.  There's lots of people out there who do fantastically by investing in lottery ticket stocks, unproven technologies, companies with high P/E ratios, etc...  Heck The Motley Fool has an entire newsletter, Rule Breakers, that has outperformed the market by 28% over the past several years using this strategy...so growth investing clearly works if done correctly.  [more]

The Global Demographic Headwind

July 28, 2010 – Comments (6)

I came across a fascinating article written by PIMCO's Bill Gross this morning.  The main thesis of the piece is that slowing global population growth is going to act as a significant economic headwind in the coming years.  It's a great read and an inspiration for everyone to go out there and make some babies :).  I kid.  At the very least, the United States should seriously consider loosening its immigration policies in an effort to snag productive people from other countries, emphasis on productive.  Food for thought. Enjoy.  [more]

I love the new CAPS rules. I can now rate Cano Petroleum, a stock that could easily double from this level.

July 28, 2010 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: CANO.DL

I would like to give a standing ovation to the fine folks at CAPS for changing the rules to the game so that companies with prices per share of less than a dollar can be picked.  Sure, there's always going to be people out there who try to game the system by shorting penny stock garbage, but there are a number of legitimate investment opportunities in legitimate distressed companies.  [more]

Hooray, It's Letter to Investors Season

July 28, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: AON , HAWKQ.DL

I love earnings season.  Yes, it's great to see the results of the companies that one has invested time in researching, but to me that's not the best part of this time of the year.  At the beginning of the new quarter, most mutual funds and hedge funds publish their quarterly letters to investors.  This is a chance to take a peek at the stocks that some of the best investors in the world own and often to read a description of their reasons for buying them.  There's few better ways to become a great investor than looking at the actions of other great investors.  [more]

Excellent Short Case for Salesforce.com

July 27, 2010 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: CRM

While some of the articles over at Seeking Alpha often leave a little to be desired, many of them are pretty good. Possibly the best feature that the company has been running lately is its "Just One Stock" series of articles.  In these pieces, someone at SA interviews a seasoned investment manager and asks them for their best stock idea at the moment.  [more]

Many ETFs are Stupid and Shouldn't Exist

July 26, 2010 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: USO , UNG

Every time i hear an interview with an "investment advisor" on the radio and they say that they only invest in ETFs I cringe.  I just don't get them.  Sure some, like the ones that invest in a basket of actual stocks, are fine.  But many of them are a complete joke.  The worst of the ETFs are the ones that are supposed to track a commodity or a basket of commodities.    [more]

Riding the Coattails of an Activist Investor in CAPS, A New Type of Special Situation Trade

July 14, 2010 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: AVNW

Last week I briefly mentioned that I went long a company called Aviant Network (AVNW) in CAPS in an attempt to ride the coattails of an activist investor on what appears to be a cheap company. Following in the footsteps of an activist investor is a somewhat new investing strategy for me, but it is a type of "Special Situation" that I am trying to become more familiar with.  What better place to experiment with new investing strategies than CAPS?  [more]

Chinese companies 'rent' white foreigners

July 13, 2010 – Comments (5)

I posted the other day that Chinese small caps typically scare the he-two-sticks out of me and I almost never invest in them in real life (see post: Have any Chinese babies been thrown out with the fraudulent bathwater?).  Of course I then went on to give the thumbs up to a Chinese small cap, Tongxin International (TXIC) in CAPS more as an experiment than anything.  [more]

July 12, 2010 – Comments (7)

In order to do well in the game of CAPS one has to have a huge portfolio of stocks.  The 14 concentrated positions combined with high-yield bonds that I hold in real-life wouldn't cut it here.  I'm actually fine with that because being forced to pick a ton of stocks makes me look at companies and situations that I might not normally consider investing in.    [more]

Why I'll never buy stock in Cablevision or MSG

July 09, 2010 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: CVC , MSG

I have blasted Cablevision's incompetent ruling family, the Dolans, specifically James Dolan, numerous times in the past.  If there's a worse CEO out there I don't know who he is.  I hate nepotism in corporations, and James Dolan is a prime example of why shareholders should be afraid, very afraid if the son or daughter of a company's founder takes over as its CEO.  I'm not saying that all children of companies founders are incompetent, but they often are.  [more]
