Everyone sing it with me, the Fed is not going to raise rates, do da, do da. I have been saying for months and I will continue to say that the Federal Reserve will not raise interest rates before the end of the year and likely not until mid-2009 at the earliest. Much of the dollar strength that we have seen lately is based on the premise that the Federal Reserve is more likely to raise interest rates before the ECB. I say hogwash. [more]

Man, following the markets closely can be exhausting. As much as I would like to ignore the day-to-day movement of stocks and commodities, I find it too fascinating to be able to. Fortunately, I have trained myself not to make rash decisions and panic over short-term moves, but instead to focus on the big picture. [more]

Last week I posted a "Fearless Forecast" with my top tem predictions for 2009 (see post: The Fearless Forecast: 10 Stone Cold Lead Pipe Locks for 2009). At the time I didn't post any explanations of my them, but I plan on going into greater depth on each one in future posts. [more]

I always talk about stocks that I find interesting, but often neglect to talk about my real world portfolio because Motley Fool employees and contractors are not allowed to talk about stocks within ten days of purchasing or selling them. So I figured that I would take some time share a few of the real-world transactions that I made in July. [more]

The stocks of tanker companies have been hit pretty hard over the past month or so, even shares of my favorite one Frontline (FRO). Rightfully so, too given the massive 46% drop in oil-tanker rental rates that was reported last week. Rates may soon begin to reclaim some of the ground that they lost though. Bloomberg is reporting that tanker owners have instructed captains to slow down their ships. The average speed of very large crude carriers (VLCCs as they are called in the industry) has reportedly dropped 3.8% to 10.21 knots since July 12. [more]

I have an amazing time-saving tip for investors out there. Don't bother reading about or watching reports on the Federal Reserve's meeting today. You know why, because the Fed is going to do the same thing with rates today that it will do with them for the entirety of 2008...NOTHING. [more]

Is it just me, or does anyone else out there wish that Alan Greenspan would just shut the heck up and go hang out on a beach somewhere. The "Maestro" (HAHAHAHA) is up to his old tricks talking about the economy from the sidelines again. In an interview with CNBC said last week "I think the data at this stage in the United States are not ... suggesting recession...We're right on the brink and I would be more surprised if we didn't (have a recession) than if we did, given the financial state. (see article: Global slowdown may put U.S. in recession: Greenspan)." Guess how we got there moron?! [more]

It’s a beautiful day here on the New York City area. I just spent four hours at the pool and I am now sitting on my deck working on my laptop. Days like today are nice enough to make me forget about how frustrating the stock market has been lately. Those of you who have been following my blog know that I have actually been fairly accurate with my sector and specific company calls. I’m definitely batting over .500 and probably closer to .750…yet my portfolio returns are still flat to slightly negative over the past year, mainly as a result of multiple contraction. I would be in much worse shape if I didn’t hit a home run with a 30% gain on the ten or so stocks that I shorted for a few weeks ago when the market really hit a rough patch. [more]
