Things That Make You Go Hmmm - Hudson Valley Holding Corp

May 27, 2009 – Comments (1)

Occasionally, I investigate some of the stocks that make the top 5 losers of the day on the CAPS homepage.  Today, I spotted Hudson Valley Holding Corp on the list (HUVL.OB).  It's down 13.25% for the day so I thought I'd check it out.    [more]

Brandywine Realty Trust: A REIT Bargain Even With the Impending Carnage

May 21, 2009 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: BDN

In the real estate apocalypse, I admit that I am an avid buyer.  The naysayers have proclaimed that commercial real estate is the next shoe to fall.  It may surprise you to learn that I don’t disagree with that hypothesis.  In fact, I believe that commercial real estate will suffer over the next few years and residential real estate still has further to drop.  However, I would suggest that many stocks in the sector already are priced for a disaster of epic proportions and many high quality REITs have been overly punished due to the excesses of their peers.  Due to this, I have been searching for bargains among REITs.  I want to find quality REITs that offer favorable risk-reward propositions.  [more]

Hercules Offshore: Follow the Cash Flows

May 20, 2009 – Comments (8) | RELATED TICKERS: HERO

There are a lot of good buys among oil service companies right now as the market has hammered most of them due to the recessionary environment and the plunging oil prices we saw earlier in the year. TMF Should Allow Us To Rate Microcaps on CAPS

May 12, 2009 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: DECK , GMCR , MNST

One of the things I find most frustrating about CAPS is the inability to rate and write commentary on most microcap stocks.  Microcaps tend to offer the greatest potential for gains because they are the most obscure and overlooked stocks in the market.  Moreover, many of them have a ton of room to grow.    [more]

The Stupid Call: How I Became Overconfident

May 08, 2009 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: PEGA

Over the past year, I have slowly but surely become better and better at valuation.  Most of my stock market success can be attributed to that.  What's more --- I've become extremely good at coming up with relatively accurate valuations in a very small amount of time.  Many people will spend hours created very complex DCF spreadsheets --- I have a form that I call the "Quick DCF".  It's a DCF, but I only need to plug in a few figures (e.g. cost of capital, long-term growth rate, initial free cash flows, net value of assets).  I've been able to derive the figures for this spreadsheet in a more rapid fashion over time.  In fact, lately, I've been making some stock picks on here with 10 minutes of research.  [more]
