Chinese Water Shortage?

February 28, 2008 – Comments (6) | RELATED TICKERS: PHO , BHP , RTP.DL

It's a well known fact that the Chinese modernization has been the main driver in the commodities boom super-cycle. Despite it's large geographic and population size China is actually somewhat natural resource poor, which causes them to import massive amounts of raw material from foreign countries, a service that companies like BHP and Rio Tinto are very happy to provide.  [more]

US Dollar hits all time low vs Euro

February 26, 2008 – Comments (6) | RELATED TICKERS: GLD

The dollar continues to get absolutely pummelled  . Which is not at all suprising considering the Fed's moves of late. I am not someone who necessarily believes that is a bad thing. What is very bad in my opinion is how fast this move has happened and is continuing to happen. The speed of the move gives our economy little time to adjust to take advantage of the trend. Manufacturers (who could benefit from being able compete more cost effectively in the global market) just don't start up overnight. Many of the companies who could have benefited from this have either shut down in post NAFTA environment or been bought by foreign companies (like Rubbermaid). That isn't a anti-freetrade rant it's just a fact. There have been many benefits for America due to NAFTA to the American consumer. However when the dollar and the labor unions were strong our manufacturers did lose major market share as their operational costs were too just high. Given adequate time if we can slow the dollar's descent I think our country could really take advantage of this trend in the dollar. But there seems to be little sign of that happening.   [more]

End of the Line at Value Line?

February 14, 2008 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: VALU

My family for three generations has used the the value line service and it has treated us very well. That's why I was very sad to see that the man who created the proprietary model for the value line rating system is unceremoniously being given the boot.  [more]
