When I think of distopias, several examples come to mind: Animal Farm, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, etc. All of which hold up a mirror to the sinister potential of civilization. However, my favorite distopia is The Giver by Lois Lowry http://www.amazon.com/Giver-Lois-Lowry/dp/0385732554/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264599036&sr=8-1. This book is found in the children's section of the library, I discovered it when I studied it for an adolescent lit class, but the message is subtle enough that an adult perspective is needed to do it justice. I made my husband read it, and he has since recommended it to friends. (The author had a specific sinister historical period in mind when she wrote it, but doesn't directly allude to it in the book. See if you can figure it out.) [more]
If you haven't read the story yet about the news station Signal FM in Haiti, take the time to read it. I found it encouraging. God bless them!
Wanted to get BABY at 14:40 but it had a jump at the start before I made up my mind so I had to settle for 14.60. The other stock I was watching was BSI but price jumped more than I wanted to pay today. I'm trying to quit buying stock at year highs. I have not yet been initiated into the mysteries of after-hour trading so that I can have an order waiting at market open.
Happy trading everyone. I've already had some fun :)
After January 19th it will be $8.95 rather than $12.95 a transaction. [more]
I would say so from how the discussion list I'm signed up for as a kindle user is buzzing. I need to turn off the automatic e-mails which have gone crazy in the last few minutes.
Any more insight on the popularity of the Nook? Responses welcome!
Yesterday the inspector came by to see that the wiring had been done properly and passed it in 5 minutes. Hooray! Now we just have to wait for the power company to turn the electricity on. [more]
It has occurred to me that I have no idea how many real human Capsters there are and how many robots, androids, and clones fill up the membership rolls. [more]
My sister-in-law who is getting married in the spring just bought a $200 titanium wedding band. I don't remember having that choice when I got married 10 years ago.The blue-grey color is very attractive. I wonder what kind of a jewelry market there is for titanium. [more]
Hooray! My portifolio is finally in the green again in spite of my starting some investments at the year high a couple years ago. I made many classic beginner mistakes (thinking a high P/E was great was probably one of the strangest. But at least ISRG turned out well) However, it is nice to recover from losses even if they are unrealized. I'm celebrating now, because it could be red again tomorrow:) just around a 1% gain right now. [more]
