A Survey of Christmas Gifts: Please Share :)

December 29, 2010 – Comments (50) | RELATED TICKERS: BKS , JCP , TSCDY

I thought that it would be fun to list what gifts I got from what company if known. Also feel free to list the gifts that you got if you wish to. It doesn't have to be an exhaustive list. I'll be as thorough as possible to generate as many comments as I can. Part of the fun of getting gifts is talking about them. Yes, some of us have not yet entirely lost a sense of amazement that others actually go to the trouble to get us pleasant surprises--most of the time that is! Also this exercise may help someone to have a creative gift idea for next year.  [more]

Railroads: Past Verses Future

December 28, 2010 – Comments (31) | RELATED TICKERS: BNI.DL , CSX , UNP

I'm writing this to answer a question my husband asked me. In the past one heard about the enormous fortunes of the railroad barons, but railroads seem to have diminished in importance today. Even in my own lifetime of thirty some odd years I've noticed fewer and shorter trains. Where is the political power they wielded? What happened? Are they still a force to be reckoned with?  [more]

What Did Scrooge Do for a Living?

December 23, 2010 – Comments (27) | RELATED TICKERS: SCR , O , GE

Based on movies one gets the impression that Scrooge was a loan shark who took mortgages as securities. However, I'm not sure that is what he did based on the story itself which mentions a counting house and also that Scrooge goes to meet others on the Exchange. I also thought it said something about his changing currency so could Scrooge do some ForEx trading on the side?  [more]

Some Reasons Businesses Fail? A Few Cautionary Tales

December 14, 2010 – Comments (40)

My husband should get the credit for most of these observations. As an engineer he looks for potential problems so he can solve them. Feel free to add your own observations or cautionary tales. Business is challenging enough without making these easily avoidable mistakes obvious even to a customer. This is for my own catharsis since I feel terrible when businesses do these losing strategies.   [more]

What Do Investors Do for a Living? Please Share Your Story:)

December 09, 2010 – Comments (100) | RELATED TICKERS: MFGLQ.DL , EDU

Some of us invest for a living, but many of us hold down jobs not directly related to investing. Some of us are entrepreneurs (I had to look up the spelling for that word!), but others of us are still in school preparing for the future. Also some of us are between jobs and are hoping "between" will not last too long.  [more]

A Know-It-All, Not!

December 01, 2010 – Comments (26)

Recently I've been sharing my opinions freely on all sorts of topics. Rather than write a foolanthropy disclaimer for every opinion which may only be worth 10 cents at best, I ask your forgiveness for my newly discovered "expertise" in the precious metals market, automotives, spices, etc.   [more]
