When I hear people bash the United States, I hear a lot of things. I hear people talk about its healthcare system's problems, its inequality and greed, and how the Chinese economy will soon surpass it. Thoughts on CAPS Strategy

Let me start off by saying I think CAPS is awesome. As a very young investor, its been a great way for me to get a bunch of experience, without actually losing any money. But when you think about it, some aspects of CAPS are kind of unrealistic. First you don't have to deal with any monetary limits or comissions, which can be big factors for an investor with a small portfolio. Second, you can't use options. And how about the fact that all your picks are bets of the same size? In real life you probably would invest more in the stocks you felt more strongly about. Even in Limit poker, you can at least keep making more bets of the same size. But in CAPS, its just one pick per stock, and that's it.   [more]

Reexamination Day 11: Laclede Group (LG)

Haha oh man LG... First note that this isn't the LG that makes phones, although I think I made that mistake when picking it originally. Just goes to show how little I knew back then! So what is Laclede Group? Well, its a small natural gas company in Missouri that somehow has been around well over 150 years. They claim to actually be the 8th oldest stock on the NYSE.   [more]
