The 2010 Elite Dividend Stocks List

September 28, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: JNJ , KO , PG

As dividend growth investors, we want to limit our purchases to only the very best stocks. Our first step is to look at published lists of dividend companies such as S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats, US Broad Dividend Achievers™ Index and The U.S. Dividend Champions. These lists are used to narrow the population of all publically traded companies down to the very best dividend stocks. When these lists are combined, as I did with the Stock Ideas list, it is still a large and daunting collection of 218 unique companies. So, how do we find the Elite companies on this list?

In 2009, I devised additional criteria to apply to the Stock Ideas list in an effort to eliminate all but the the Elite Dividend Stocks. Here is the additional criteria that I came up with, along with the companies that met the criteria:  [more]

9 Dividend Stocks Giving Shareholders A Raise

September 27, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: LMT , MCD , MSFT

When evaluating a company as a potential income investment you look at its calculated fair value, ability to generate cash, debt position and the net present value of its dividend stream compared to alternative “safe” investments. The advantages dividend stocks have over “safe” investments are potential capital appreciation and dividend growth. Not only are your earnings compounding, but the rate of earnings is growing.

Below are several companies giving their shareholders a raise with increased cash dividends:  [more]

Dividend Stocks Poised To Beat Inflation

September 21, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: JNJ , KO , XOM

Investing in dividend growth stocks is not about buying a current high yield, but instead building a high yield-on-cost over time. One of the criticisms I am hearing more often is, “That low yield isn’t even covering inflation.” This is a very valid concern, if true. To test this criticism, I built a model it and ran several dividend stocks through it. The results just might surprise you… Projected Inflation

First, let’s look at inflation, specifically the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U). I chose this index since it focuses on a typical market basket of goods and services consumed by all urban consumers. In the August 2010 Budget and Economic Outlook, published by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), it offers a very mild outlook for inflation. The CBO is projecting the CPI-U for 2010 to be 1.6%, 1.0% in 2011, 1.7% in 2012-2014 and 2.3% 2015-2020.  [more]

When it comes to selecting dividend stocks, one of the most important items to look for is consistency in raising dividends. Sure it is easy to increase dividends when the economy is booming and business is good, but to be consistent a company has to persevere and continue to increase dividends even during the tough times.

Below are several companies that have recently increased their cash dividends to shareholders:  [more]

Is It Time To Sell Long-Bonds?

September 14, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: MCD , PEP , PG

As the market declines and fear sets in, there has been a pronounced movement from equities to bonds. This cash in-flow has helped fuel higher bond prices and lower interest rates. For some portfolios, bonds have been one of the few positives over the last 24 months. Is it possible that bonds are the next big bubble to burst?

Jeremy Siegel certainty thinks so based on his recent Wall Street Journal article The Great American Bond Bubble. In the article, he opined that the bond bubble may have far more serious consequences for investors than the internet and technology bubble that burst some 10 years ago. The Nasdaq has yet to recover those losses as it is currently selling at less than half the peak it reached a decade ago.  [more]

5 Dividend Stocks Providing Positive Feedback

September 13, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: BRC , CASY , FRS

It seems that ever so many years the market turns down and someone declares the death of buy-and-hold. Some even go as far to say that Warren Buffett has lost his touch. With time on their side, the buy-and-hold investors and Mr. Buffett always seem to make a spectacular rebound. As long-term dividend investors our focus should be on acquiring fundamentally sound dividend growth stocks at a reasonable valuation and maintaining our asset allocation.

Stocks That Pay Monthly Dividends

September 07, 2010 – Comments (7) | RELATED TICKERS: CSJ , ETO , O

There is a reason that most mortgages are paid monthly and not quarterly. Banks are looking for reassurance the payments will continue to come in. In much the same way, many investors find comfort in owning stocks that pay monthly dividends. There are several advantages to receiving dividends each month over the traditional quarterly, semi-annual or annual dividends. Here are a few, along with some monthly dividend payers: Consistent Income

Quarterly, semi-annual or annual dividends will produce an erratic income each month. Depending on the mix and payment timing of securities in your portfolio, there may not be two months in which you receive the same amount of dividend income. Stocks that pay monthly dividends will help smooth it out some.  [more]
