I don't really know a lot about STD, nor am I a banking expert, or an "investing" expert. I am pretty good at trading based on patterns (not so much TA). But I do hold two "investments"; BAC and STD. The one I am having trouble with is STD...I am buying because others are fearful, and don't get me wrong, I am glad the price is dropping so I can pick more up...but how come nobody else on this board is ecstatic about STD? Does anybody know how discover makes money? Most credit card companies make it off of the swipes but discover doesnt charge per swipe. Since they are not associated with any banks I guess they take the credit risk themseles and make money off of late fees?

The ticker got changed from DSCO to DSCOD and now the shares are down 20%. Is there any correllation? I know why the ticker got changed, but do you think people are now dumping it because the whole reason they bought it was that it was a penny stock, and now that its over 4 dollars it psychologically not as exciting? I can't decide if i should sell or not

I would like to now what you all think about something I spent some time pondering this morning. Due to the blizzard in NYC (and probably a lot of other places) the volume of the SPY was less than 1/3 of what it usually is. Almost all of the momentum names got beat up (nflx, bidu, crm, ffiv, etc). Although they all finished the day not down too badly (except nflx), they were all down near 2% at one point. There are 4 posibilities for this (that I can think of) [more]

When investing, as opposed to just picking undervalued companies (which I do), my favorite way to trade/invest (mostly because of how easy it is) is to find a sector I consider undervalued (or has enough momentum) and buy the best etf for that sector (based on chart performance) or (and i like this one more) buying the best company in its sector. For some its obvious...PM for tobacco, KO for soft drinks (I guess PEP is comparable too), MCD for fast food, NKE for sneakers, VFC (coh too, but that is more specific)for clothing, and STD for European banks. Seems like a good strategy and a little bit of free money. Does anybody have any links or book suggestions or their own strategies for making extra by selling covered calls?

If we do experience large inflation (which I think we will), commodity price increases always lead to consumer price increased (why wouldn't a sector raise prices if their costs increase?). However, wall street hates inflation, so stock prices may not react so nicely. So if one truly believes a precious metal is a good hedge against inflation, then you should be buying the actual, physical metal...how could you be bearish on equities and buy metal miners? I am bullish on metal miners, but for non-contradictory reasons. Inflation is bad because of "menu costs" and "shoe leather costs" and redistribution of wealth...but its not the end of the world...stuff gets more expesnive, and peoples incomes go up (people forget this second point...where else would the money go? I am very bullish in silver. I am not denying in any way that they are heavily shorting silver. But I've asked why so many times to so many people and still have not got an answer. I legitimately want to know what jpm would have to gain from shorting silver and not covering at the bottom, it makes no sense to me. What would be their reasoning for trying to manipulate the market? [more]

Oh yeah, you wanna expose corruption? Best way to do that (besides rape) is to crash the websites of the 2 major credit card companies...theyre a bunch of f*$kin clowns. If you want to be a martyr, practice what you preach.

Quick question about natural gas because I don't know too much about it. I always hear that we have way too much of supply of natural gas. So then why the hell aren't we using it? High supply = cheap price...why wouldn't we want to use cheap energy?
