Merrill Lynch announces the sale of $30.6 Billion Face Value of ABS CDO's for $6.7 Billion and the market cheers.  That's great, right?  They are finally admitting the paper is only worth pennies on the dollar and are getting rid of the majority of their problem assets.  But wait, what's really going on here?   [more]

Southwest Airlines announced it's 69th straight quarterly profit today - yes, that's not a misprint - an airline turned a profit.  None of the others have managed to turn a profit this year, and the exuse you always hear from the other airlines is fuel costs.  Besides the fact that it's pretty obvious the whole industry model is flawed and they couldn't turn a profit when oil was $30/barrel - I mean Continental went bankrupt twice within a 2-year period even after a governement bailout - what does Southwest do that's so different?  [more]
