I just opened a Roth IRA with Schwab. I have not funded it yet because I don't have cash lying around. However, I do have assets as equities. What is a good resource to determine whether or not I would have to pay capital gains tax on my assets should I sell (converting my individual account to the Roth)? I'd like to convert those assets to the Roth but not if I have to pay taxes today to lose the flexibility of accessing my money tomorrow without an extra 10 percent hit. For the best answer, I will disclose some personal details. I am a 23-year old english teacher in China. I make less than $10,000 a year and have less than $20,000 in assets. Help! [more]
