The CRASH is just beginning

July 31, 2009 – Comments (27)

About 1 in 10 Californians with a home loan is now in default, and there's growing evidence that the mortgage meltdown is spreading to commercial real estate.

The home mortgage delinquency rate -- the percentage of borrowers who have missed several payments and are in the first stage of foreclosure -- climbed in June to 9.5% in California and 9.9% in Los Angeles County, according to First American CoreLogic.

The Cutting and Slashing Continues...

July 30, 2009 – Comments (11)

The company got a possible lifeline this month with a tentative deal to cut wages of union workers further. If approved, the pay of some 35,000 union members will be cut by an additional 5 percent -- following a 10 percent pay cut earlier this year. That will save the company $45 million to $50 million per month.  [more]

July 30, 2009 – Comments (7)

As of 10 minutes ago, Larry Kudlow would like you to believe that Q2 earnings are so much better than Q1. That is a flat out lie. The chart below, straight out of Bloomberg which we demand all readers with a BBERG terminal replicate using SPX Index EA , demonstrates that Q2 earnings are now in fact worse than Q1. While in Q1 the YoY EPS drop was -31.49%, as of right now the drop is -32.41%. And the drop in revenues is much worse.  [more]

Using public records and Internet searches, the Herald-Tribune identified hundreds of deals that exhibited classic red flags for fraud. In other cases, flippers repeatedly traded properties from their company to their own name, each time increasing the price and the amount they borrowed.

Lenders knew they were writing bad loans, but did it anyway because they were making so much money on underwriting fees, said Jack McCabe, a Deerfield Beach-based real estate consultant ...

There is a big economic difference between building and selling a new home vs. selling an existing house.  A new home sale drives fantastic economic stimulation.  Land must be developed, materials purchased, labor to build, etc....In addition, a new home generates lots of tax dollars to government from profits all the way down the supply chain to generally a much higher property tax valuation on the land and impact fees.  [more]

Before the economic crisis, 67% of Americans aged 62 or older said they planned to retire before age 70. Now, the figure has dropped to 40%, according to a survey from Golden Gateway Financial. "Even though some economists are beginning to grow optimistic, older Americans continue to feel real pain and must make hard tradeoffs and decisions," said Eric Bachman, the firm's chief executive.
