Blood! Blood! Red, red blood!

According to my old drill sgts that's what makes the green grass grow and it's what I have in my head when I look at my portfolio lately due to all the red I see.  So it feels really good to have a day where all my stocks, with the exception of 1, is green on the day and that one is barely down.  There's still an hour left in the market so maybe I'm cursing myself by cheering already... but I don't care.  [more]

So uhhhh.... what happens to the DJI

If Bank of America and Citigroup get nationalized and General Motors goes bankrupt.  None of them are major components at the moment due to their share prices being so small but I'd have to imagine nationalization and bankruptcy would wipe out their sharholders and they would have to be delisted.  The Dow Jones 30 then becomes 27 and I would think all three companies would need to be replaced.  Anyone have any guesses what suitable replacement companies would be?  Not saying ths is going to happen just a kind of "what if" scenario I was thinking about while driving into work this morning, but it's a plausible one.    [more]

Portfolio realignment

February 17, 2009 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DXD , DDM , GLD

Finally got a significant move downward on the DJI that I've been waiting for.  It's a little worrisome that the the DJI is much closer to it's nov 20 lows than the S+P, but oh well.  I went ahead and sold off my DXD and closed the caps picks because I'm thinking (hoping/praying) that the low set in Nov will hold for a little while... even a week or two would be fine with me.  I've also been of the opinion that the people calling for gold to start falling like 3-4 weeks ago were a bit early in their call.  I still mostly see gold moving counter to the market.  So if you think the market keeps going down gold isn't the worst spot to be.  That being said gold has had a good run and I'm going to pretend the DJI nov low will hold and therefore there isn't much temporary downside left.  So I sold off my GLD position and closed that pick.  Also closed my SLV pick for similar reasoning.    [more]
