MON and SQM -Catching beatdowns

June 25, 2008 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: MON , SQM

So Monsanto after reporting earnings yesterday is down nearly 5% today after saying they made a boatload of money and raising their yearly estimates.  Unfortunately for them they didn't raise their earnings estimates enough and they didn't beat anaylst estimates by enough.  Life is hard when you're an overbought golden stock and have to live life on a pedestal.  They've been growing EPS at double digit rates for a while now and will continue to do so at least through the next couple of quarters.  This is still one of the best pure ag plays and and I don't see the ag boom dying down much soon.  People gotta eat yo.  MON is also one of those stocks I thought about picking up a few months back, but I'm a little turned off by some of their business practices which while perfectly legal seem to be morally gray.  On the plus side they are the number one producer of geneticaly modified organisms (GMOs) in the world, and who don't love GMOs... besides Europe?  No one, that's who.  If the stock dips back below $120 (Bah this comapny makes too much money sell it!) I think there's a definite buying opportunity.  [more]

Broke down and bought GE

June 24, 2008 – Comments (6) | RELATED TICKERS: GE

GE is just too cheap at this price.  4.5% dividend yield and the company is at 5 year lows.  I'm thinking value investors are going to keep this bouyed at this level.  It's energy and infrastructure segements are strong and the company is making money.  Even after the market truns back into bull mode (it'll happen sometime) I don't expect this stock to skyrocket, but the stock is oversold at this price so I'm thinking it has to start to correct back upwards soon.  And if it does go much lower I'll buy more and lower my cost basis.  2-3 years from now I expect to be smiling about this investment.  [more]
