How To Play The Mobile Payments Coming Boom

April 30, 2012 – Comments (0)

As Apple (AAPL) double its income in its recent earnings report in the second quarter, Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, accounting for about half its revenue.  Based on the "remarkable" iPhone sales, Apple's share of the smartphone market likely increased to 24 percent in the first quarter from 23 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011, said analysts at Canaccord Genuity.  As the growth of smartphone adoption increases across the globe, this is lending more relevance to smartphones as a mobile payment device. The volume of all types of mobile payments will top $200 billion by 2015, up from $16 billion in 2010, according to research and advisory firm Aite Group.  The market for mobile card acceptance by small businesses and individual merchants is probably about $4 billion currently, but it is growing fast.   [more]

3 Outperforming REITs And Why They Are Buys Now

April 27, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: AMT , MAC , TCO

Real Estate Investment Trusts, or REITs, are popular dividend investments among income investors. That's because these dividend stocks have reliable revenue streams - but also because the REIT designation demands that 90% of taxable income gets delivered back to shareholders, often in the form of big quarterly dividend payments. As the economic recovery moves ahead, we think REITs will focus on stabilizing balance sheets, increasing property-level cash flow, and increasing the dividend payout to investors. Here are three REITs considered a buy that have outperformed the S&P in the last year.  [more]

Big Trucks Lead Use Of Natural Gas As A Transportation Fuel

April 26, 2012 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: WPRT , CLNE , CMI

Currently, natural gas is selling at its lowest price in 10 years, making it about 42% less than the cost of diesel fuel on a per-gallon basis. More importantly, the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration forecasts that this price differential will last for decades into the future. While natural gas-fueled passenger vehicles have yet to catch on, more and more managers of commercial truck fleets are beginning to replace their diesel trucks with trucks that burn compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG).  [more]

Should You Buy Into Hedge Fund ETFs?

April 25, 2012 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: ALT , CSM , QAI

Hedge funds were initially developed as an alternative investing method to create absolute returns in terms of alpha. Specifically, alpha measures risk-adjusted return or the return generated by a security, relative to the return you would expect based on its beta. An investment returning more than the return that would be expected based on its volatility is said to generate positive alpha; an investment returning less than its expected return is said to generate negative alpha. In general, hedge funds seek outperformance of a given long-only index benchmark, on a risk-adjusted basis, using limited shorting, derivatives and leverage. With these techniques, hedged portfolios can take advantage of both negative and positive performance expectations for the stocks in their portfolios. Does this strategy actually work when bottled into an ETF?  [more]

Investors Should Avoid These Best Performing CEFs

April 13, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: CLM , CRF , HAV

As we move into April, the month of March was good for investments. The S&P 500 was up 2.68% in March. There were numerous monthly dividend CEFs that surpassed the S&P 500 market return in March. The CEFs with the highest March price performance are listed below. However, investors should beware, as the best performing CEFs are not always what they seem to be. While the price performance chart shows that each of the discussed CEFs have beaten the S&P 500 year to date, these March winners should be avoided by investors.  [more]

CEFs Trading At A Discount With Increased Monthly Dividends In 2012

April 10, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: BPP.DL2 , BTZ , CHW

My recent closed-end fund research has identified several CEFs that have increased their monthly distributions to shareholders in recent months. A dividend increase not only provides more income to the shareholders but can also signal that management is confident in being able to sustain their income throughout 2012. These CEFs are also trading at significant discounts from 5-10%, suggesting they have a low valuation for potential capital gains. Here is a list of CEFs that announced increased distributions.  [more]

Specialty REITs For The Housing Recovery With Inflation Protection

April 01, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: PCL , WY , RYN

With positive signs that the housing market is starting to recover and the possibility of higher inflation in the coming years, income investors should take a look at REITs specializing in timber. Demand for timber is directly related to the underlying demand for pulp and paper products, lumber, panels, and other wood products. As a REIT, these companies are required to payout 90% of earnings as dividends. The increase in demand for timber will lead to increased profits and dividend payouts in the coming years. I believe the next few years will be very bullish for lumber and timber prices. With strong US and Asian demand pushing up prices, stocks such as Weyerhaeuser (WY), Rayonier (RYN), and Plum Creek Timber (PCL) will be big winners. An alternative to purchasing individual stocks in this sector is buying shares of the Guggenheim Timber ETF (CUT). Here is a discussion of each timber stock.  [more]
