Money as a Measure of Karma

September 26, 2009 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: BCA , WHI , HCBK

The economy can be thought of as a big circle, goods and services flowing in one direction, money flowing in the other.  What would things look like if you took the money away?  [more]

New Utility Screen

July 01, 2009 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: BIP , DUK , AEE

CINC Household expressed an interest in utilities, and twenty minutes later, so did one of the talking heads on CNBC.  Since I haven't done a screen in a while, I applied my usual methodology with a sector twist.  I've been bitten badly by sector plays in the past, but how badly could utilities hurt?  As usual, my screen selects for a balance of high dividend and high margin with managable debt.

Where are all the dollars coming from?

May 29, 2009 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: GLD , EWZ

The Fed currently shows more money sitting in banks than there are dollars in circulation (go here and choose "Selected Liabilities").  Since I still have some cash in my own pocket, and I presume most of you do, too, I take this to mean that the "dollars in circulation" line in the chart referenced above is wrong, and inflation is here.  Regardless of what they say, the Fed's been printing money.  Time for inflation plays, time for foreign investments.  [more]

An Example of Slow Thinking

April 22, 2009 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DMLP , DSX , ENP

Ok, I don't have many fans, but I appreciate you.  I screwed up in my last post.  In building my pick list, I did one sort BACKWARDS.  I presented the wrong stocks, and my conjecture about sector rotation and a possible bottom is total garbage.  There's nothing neccessarily wrong with my picks -- they're all low debt and good margin -- but you can't attribute anything special about them to my reasoning, because the picks presented do not follow my reasoning.  For what it's worth, I put money down CTRP and ORCL based on my faulty process.  My new correct list includes many of my old picks, which seems to support the Foolish consensus that this market is still stuck in the mud.  [more]

Remain calm! Do not panic!

April 19, 2009 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: ORCL , CTRP , RGLD

The Fed's lending, taken as a proxy for interest rates, shows that we haven't turned yet.  Therefore, my high yield, good margin strategy won't change.  The stocks I picked a few months ago have had a good run, so I redid my screen.  Interestingly, the threshold yield for what I'll go for has dropped considerably, but the required margin has risen quite a bit... might this be a signal that the growth stocks are due?  [more]
