Does Speculation drive prices DOWNward?

January 08, 2008 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: COP , GE

If you've listened to the news lately, you'll hear that many, if not all, of the so-called experts on crude oil prices are claiming the primary reason for the oil prices being so high ($97/bbl as of this posting) is that speculators are driving the price upward.  Here's where my left-brain kicks in:  If oil just hit $100 for the first time ever (and it did), would most speculators be SELLING or BUYING?  I would think most speculators would be SELLING.  If this is the case, then we have an artificially LOW price at $97.  In other words, if Supply and Demand were left to run its course, perhaps Oil would be at $110 or $120 or higher, but it is kept artificially LOW (I know that sounds weird when you're talking $97/bbl) by speculators selling.  Now, I could be wrong and it could be that a bunch of speculators are jumping in at $97 oil, but virtually NOBODY thinks oil will be over $90 in a year, so I'm inclined to think most speculators would be selling.  [more]
