ENERGY: We Have Solutions. Why Add More Problems?

June 24, 2008 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: USO

There has been a lot of press lately about being "green" and using alternative fuels that are more environmentally friendly than petroleum.  Also, there's an apparent "oil shortage," so we really need to look at these alternatives, we're told.  Bio-diesel and ethanol have been the two biggest pushes at the moment since they're readily available.  Several people also own cars with hybrid-electric engines like the Toyota Prius.  Hydrogen power is probably not too far behind.  While these all sound like great alternatives, they all have one thing in common--they're great in "Proof of Concept" mode, but in practice, they leave a lot to be desired.    [more]

Volatility, Baby!

February 02, 2007 – Comments (0)

It's what I got. I've been all the way up to 150 in score points and back down to near 0 (at least I didn't go negative!), then almost all the way back up again in the course of two months. Now, since CAPS is using the S&P 500 performance as a benchmark, this doesn't necessarily mean that I've every been in bad shape. After all, I've managed to stay ahead of the S&P, even if just barely at times. That's more than some Wall Street brokers can say. I've only been in this game for a couple of months, so I still have yet to prove my record.  [more]

Ouch!

January 18, 2007 – Comments (2)

Wow, I've been out of town on my day job, still checking CAPS every now and then, and things have certainly turned nasty. I don't have time to update my picks, but thought I'd throw out a blog for the fun of it. It appears that most of the picks I'm fairly certain about are having a hard time. From a purely game-oriented standpoint, I could bow out now, take the accuracy hit, and re-up when they start to turn positive again, but I think I'd rather stick it out since I still believe what I've said. TMFEldrehad has been doing well with his red-thumb picks. Let's hope he can keep it up, but you never know. Pick too many, and you can lose loads of points--unlimited downside there. What's up with Northwest anyway? They're planning on buying a small regional airline to 'save' it, when they can't even save themselves. That's one of the red-thumb picks I'm really certain about. Anyway, once all is said and done, I think I'm going to be well over 100 points again--maybe even 200 in a couple of weeks. I could be wrong, but I haven't changed my opinion on any of these yet.  [more]

Happy New Year!

January 02, 2007 – Comments (0)

I hope everyone had a great time over the holidays. While it's true we had some sad news with the passing of former President Gerald Ford, we've got a brand-new year ahead of us. You and I can make a fresh start.  [more]

Holidays

December 22, 2006 – Comments (0)

On the highly speculative chance that anyone actually reads this blog, I just want to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone playing the game! I have plenty of gifts to wrap and will be on vacation between now and the New Year, so I doubt I'll have much chance to write. Well, there is still all that snow on the ground, so there's not really anywhere to go. If you're stuck in an airport somewhere reading this trying to get to or through Denver, here's a silver lining: the airport is supposed to open a couple of runways in about 20 minutes, but I think that's only for departures. Hopefully arrivals won't be terribly far behind.  [more]
