SA article - How The Federal Reserve Is Monetizing Debt

August 26, 2009 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: UDN

Read the article hear. It is very clear and if it is true, it is pretty outrageous. I never doubted tyhe government's ability and willingness to deceive for "our common good". But still, it is shocking.  [more]

Inflation will help to reflate the economy argument – why it is wrong.

August 23, 2009 – Comments (8)

I’ve been quite fascinated recently by the inflation/ deflation argument. There is no denying that our money supply grew exponentially in the last year. It is natural to expect inflation as a result. Though, some further analysis points to either deflation or stagflation situation instead.  [more]

S&P 500 got over 1015 on the 4th try

August 21, 2009 – Comments (20)

It is rather intresting to watch, though it is rather sick curiousity, how far the market can be pushed by the banks with all their free money. The news this week is really bad but the people on CNBC are all bullish and trying to explain the run up in the market this week. The explanations like: the things will get better (eventually), China will save us, mutual funds managers are underweight equities. The same explanations we heard over and over. Yet the simple truth is that the banks don't have any other place to put their FED money, so they are making trading profits with them. And because they are so big, they distort the market.  [more]

AIG and when will they stop lying in our face?

August 20, 2009 – Comments (5)

Many people were puzzled today by the market going up in the face of worsening unemployment. Later in the day Philly index came out, which was good but market was up even before. My take on it was that it was due to dollar falling. But many media outlets reported that it was due to AIG chairman promise to repay bailout money to the tune of 180 billion dollars. The news was widely reported and celebrated.  [more]

It seems inflation trade is dead for now.

August 14, 2009 – Comments (6)

There could be many reasons the market dropped today. But I have a theory - it is due to CPI number which is deflationary. The last couple months trade was on the premise of coming 10% inflation. In inflation all assets go up. Today's CPI showed that we are not quite there yet. So, everybody started unwounding the inflation trade. Dollar is up, equities are down.  [more]

US retailers are adopting high-end sales tactics.

August 13, 2009 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: GPS , ANN , JWN

I must admit that few things scare me more than visiting a high-end retailer such as Neuman Marcus or Saks. In a middle of a big an empty space there is usually an object of presumably high value, masterfully accentuated and illuminated. Around it you see 4-5 sales people circling like hungry lionesses ready to jump on their prey. Saks and Neuman are not doing so hot these days, however. All the wild game (i.e. shoppers with money) is hiding. Most likely, because they have much less money right now after stock market and housing collapse.  [more]
