The disconnect

November 22, 2009 – Comments (6)

These days financial markets and corporations have a very short-term focus, everything is about the next quarter and after that, who cares, they’ll deal with it when they get there. As it is a case with teenagers where short term gratification often gets upper hand over the long term goals, it seems to me that there will be no end to boom/bust cycles until financial markets learn (or are made to learn) to focus on long-term objectives. But you know what it means – it means an end to the get-tick-quickly schemes that require volatility. It means getting steady 2-5 % return each year. Is that even possible? It is probably not even possible; it seems to be so much against the nature of the current instant gratification society. Inn the financial press the bets are now made on how good the Christmas shopping seasons is going to be; as if a good spending by the consumers is going to heal all the wrongs with the economy. Nobody dares to look beyond the holiday season and ask - what then? What if the holiday spending is good, so what, how does it help whatever happens next?  [more]

I am looking at the market down 2nd day in the row and wondering what is up? I mean, it couldn't be due to bad fundamentals, right? Fundamentals were bad last week and the market was up. And then I remembered - November 23rd, isn't it one of the crash days predictions? Something to do with Chinese giving US a deadline to fix the dollar?  [more]

Foreign governments give up on the dollar, the avalanche to resume shortly.

November 13, 2009 – Comments (7)

As suspected, governments around the world have been trying to stop the slide of the dollar to keep their exports competitive. No luck for them. Nobody can fight the printing power of the US FED. They are giving up, which means the dollar slide could turn into an uncontrollable avalanche.   [more]

Who is the mystery buyer?

November 10, 2009 – Comments (4)

I love a good conspiracy theory. Here is one which has been discussed many times over - the PPT to the point that nobody really cares anymore. Many people noticed jamming of SPY futures , where it seemed the buyers objective was not to make a profit but to drive the market higher.  [more]
