  Numbers can be funny things.  The headline number across America this morning is 9.0% unemployment.  The non-headline numbers are 63.9% and 57.6%.  Those are the labor force participation rate and the employment to population rate for those sixteen and over in America.  [more]

And so the next leg of the W begins.  As government stimulus is running out, the US economy is tanking.  Housing and auto sales just started crashing.  The bankers will be reporting on a quarter that saw markets drop by ten percent or more after reporting on quarters that saw their investment units win every single day.  Other companies are coming to the end of easy quarter over quarter comparisons from the worst of the first leg down and suddenly aren’t going to be showing solid growth numbers the rest of this year.  [more]



On the Road Again

I'm taking my folks to see a few places they have always wanted to go.  Oddly this mostly involves South Dakota.  So far I've chatted with quite a few people and have been a bit surprised to find that 0% think the depression is over.  This is Republican country certainly, so not much support for the current DC gang.  Still most people seem to have the idea that we will pull through, but its still a long ways away. This is Lutheran and Catholic country and it shows.  Most folks seem very polite and patriotic and have strong faith in God and Country.  Even the bikers are polite.  [more]
