I have been following the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, indeed, as we are looking at marine systems in science it has been an incredible opportunity to bring news into the classroom. Also, our marine systems unit has students look at oil drilling that could happen in the Beaufort Sea area. [more]

This summer I am heading to an Tundra Science camp north of Yellowknife which studies tundra ecology and research around the permafrost and that sort of thing. It is a completely self contained community in that it has systems to produce all of its energy and water. I am going to help supervise 12 high school students who will also attend. I believe the camp has about 20 researchers from various universities for about 4 months of the year and it is shut down for the winter. It should be interesting because the researchers all different areas of expertise. [more]

When I drive into town about half way there has always been a lone bison bull. A friend said that bull was not part of any herd and had been out there alone for as long as she could remember. Well, today I saw a dead bison bull off the highway, and I think it was that one. He was getting old. [more]
