OK, something here is wrong. I know: 8% unemployment, people having trouble making mortgage payments, demand is up and donations are down at charities, restaurants cutting back hours and offering lower prices, downturn in corporate earnings and dividends, states and cities having trouble balancing bloated spending, car dealers closing, etc. Y’know, it sure seems like an ordinary recession, like the many we have had once or twice per decade recently. According to a newswire story, Chrysler bondholders (some of which are well known mutual funds) are only offering half of what Uncle Sam wants in debt for equity exchange. The writer theorizes that they are being so intransigent because they might have already bought default swaps.  [more]

Well, I spent some very pleasant evenings reading this thing, and it is a task I recommend highly. It was quite informative, and this tome (OK, only about 95 pages) has earned a place on my bookshelf next to books by Malkiel, The Intelligent Investor, Schwab, and Bogle; I learned quite a bit from this rather modest, perfunctory booklet, and I now have a rather clearer, more basic attitude towards investing.   [more]
