It was amusing, but not in the good way, to read the usual suspects engaging in market dynamics punditry trying to explain the sharp drop in gold today. Then, I read the WSJ article (dang, should have gone there first). All of a sudden, the light bulb went on, and even then, the real cause was buried at the end of said article. [more]

With the DIA being up and down 500 points the past couple of weeks, I got curious how much the individual components in the DJIA influences the movement of the index itself. I had forgotten. Yes, I know: SPY or QQQQQQ (wait, how many Q’s are there?) is a more accurate indicator of general stock market movement. Yes, I understand that DJIA is calculated kinda wacky, but in my defense I read some CFA stuff (certified financial analysis) that said in any event they do track each other fairly closely. Besides: I have been following DJIA for at least 3 decades, and have a reasonably good feel for its dynamics. [more]

Remember those exciting (or nauseating) days in the Fall of 2009: up 500 pts, down 500 pts in DIA, make up your bloody mind. It was unwise to look up your portfolio or IRA or 401K on your computer w/o an airsickness bag next to your keyboard. Well, those happy days are here again. [more]
