I Lost "Over 9,000" Caps Points This Morning.

August 30, 2013 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: TVIX , TVIZ , VIIX

...well, maybe not that many points.  But you get the idea, and hopefully the reference. :) (#hyperbole)  I was rather shocked when I pulled up my CAPS page this morning and saw that I have incurred a 2,300+ point loss today.  Then, I quickly remembered that those type of losses typically only happen when the doomed to fail reverse ETFs I always like to short do a reverse stock split.  Sure enough, I've lost 1,200+ points on TVIX, 800+ points on VIIX, and 300+ points on TVIZ, so I'm assuming all three of those (and potentially others) have enacted reverse splits.  Assumptions may be wrong, but based on the evidence I've seen that appears to be the case.  [more]

Mr. Market had a pretty bad day on August 27th, 2013, and VXX (a common baseline volatility/fear index) soared.  Why, you may ask?  Well, the Obama administration is seemingly taking the steps necessary to deliver on its "red line" ultimatum in the embattled nation of Syria after an alleged chemical attack that killed thousands of people.  We are very likely going to be getting ourselves into another Middle Eastern conflict.  Regardless of where you stand on Syrian intervention, an important question should be raised:  Should investors be very concerned about Syria developments?  My absolutely emphatic answer to this question is: It depends. (#sarcasm)  I will, however, outline a couple of reasons why I personally believe investors shouldn't flee the stock market but as of now but "keep calm and trade on."  In the grand scheme of things, I highly doubt many will remember today's drop.  [more]

Why I'm Liking First America Financial.

The insurance industry can be rather complex to maneuver through and is often "clear as mud."  These days, the most tangible aspects of insurance are the Geico Gecko, Flo, and "Nationwide is on your side."  However, I think I have pinpointed an excellent, easy-to-understand insurance industry play that will also be buoyed by the housing market upswing: First America Financial (NYSE:FAF).  [more]

The Skinny on RXi Pharmaceuticals.

August 23, 2013 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: RXII , CYTR , GALE

Most people are familiar with the phrase "you learn something new every day."  Such is the case with myself learning about a rather intriguing under-the-radar biotechnology company called RXi Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQOTH: RXII).  Many investors haven't heard of RXi even though one of its founders is an acclaimed Nobel Prize winner and the company might be poised to profit from its product line.  This article will explore some of RXi's history, what the company does, and whether or not it would be a good investment.  Overall, based on the information I've gathered, it seems that RXi is currently not a company worth risking substantial sums of capital on.  RXi is a "feast-or-famine" sort of stock which can produce monstrously huge returns for investors, but will most likely decimate the value of its shares in the end.  [more]
