Slashdot relayed today that SUN Microsystems announced on Friday they are cutting up to 6,000 jobs, or 15-18% of its workforce citing that "...CEO Jonathan Schwartz contends users will be more inclined to try open-source products such as MySQL, OpenSolaris and Sun's GlassFish application server during a time of economic stress...". Per the San Jose Mercury News' article " announcing one of the biggest tech layoffs so far this year, Sun Microsystems on Friday bought more time for its effort to expand sales and show that a strategy built around open-source software can carry the struggling Santa Clara computer maker out of the current recession and into profitability..." providing further credibility to the November 7th Motley Fool Blog ", Recession, LNUX, Gladwyne, and shareholder value". If this is Jonathan Schwartz's strategy to create shareholder value then wouldn't an acquisition of SourceForge simply represent [the] crown-jewel competitive advantage and preemptive strike for Sun ($2.6B cash) Microsystems to own the largest Open Source (potential take-over candidates) incubator in the world?  [more]

SourceForge (NASDAQ:LNUX)'s largest controlling shareholder via Gladwyne et al, and recently appointed Board Director Suzanne Present files an SEC Form 8-K after the closing bell on Friday November 14th as SourceForge (NASDAQ) plunges another 6.1% to $0.77/share and within $0.04 cash/share (including long-term investments).   [more]
