The Daily Long and Short Setup

January 31, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: GENZ.DL , CM

The market left a lot of questions on the minds of traders heading into the new month. Was today a dead-cat bounce? Was Friday's sell-off a mere overreaction? Will we see another beginning of the month market rally like we saw on 8/1, 9/1, 12/1 and 1/1? Does the best January in 14 years, mean the rest of the year will follow suit?   [more]

6 Stocks Holding Strong Despite The Dark Clouds

January 31, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: TSO , NFLX , OUTR

Friday's sell-off has the bulls walking on pins and needles right now, even though they  managed to bounce the market back up in a very respectable fashion (as of this post). But there are a lot of folks out there sensing that the bears are looming heavily on this market right now, and will look to short any kind of rally we might see. With that said, I've put together a list of six stocks that are holding up very well, and moving even higher despite the deteriorating market conditions. If you believe we will still head higher in the short-term but, nonetheless, respect the events that unfolded on Friday, then I believe you should give strong consideration to the stocks listed below, as they have done a phenomenal job of deflecting the selling pressures of the broader market.   [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

January 31, 2011 – Comments (0)

Once again, the NYSE Reversal Indicator gave us an excellent alert to the potential problems this market was heading towards. I'll be the first to admit, that I didn't play my hand as well as I should have in light of this information; essentially getting taken out of my positions by the Tuesday-Thursday rally, before finally seeing the ideal breakdown on Friday. But that is the life of the trader, in that there will always be room for improvement and for lessons to be learned in the process.   [more]

6 Breakout Setups to Be Watching

January 27, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: BGS , CELL , GRMN

The S&P refuses to break through and stay above the 1300 level - it is making for some great drama. And now you are seeing the smallest hint of selling (which probably has the bears spraying the champagne everywhere). Throughout history there have been some pretty significant sell-off that occurred on failures to break through these psychological barriers. But should this market retake the 1300 level, there are some solid plays worth taking a shot at.  [more]

Quick Snapshot of the S&P

January 26, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

We've tested the 1300 on the S&P, and so far, it has been met with some rejection. In fact if you look at the S&P ETF (SPY) the high of the day is 129.99, which coincides nicely with the S&P index highs of 1299.44. The FOMC Statement that comes out at 2:15pm EST makes for an interesting scenario where, you have a ramp up similar to what we saw prior to the last FOMC Statement release, and a critical milestone at 1300 that the S&P has yet to break through.   [more]

Unlike any of my other screens, this screen focuses on stocks trading under $10/share, and have a market cap of around $1 billion or less. As for the variables that I used in the screen, I focused on fundamentals, particularly companies that have a healthy balance sheet with little debt to speak of, with a strong prospect for rapid sales and growth in earnings, as well.

Now be aware, that these kinds of stocks carry huge risks to them. A simple downgrade, news event, or missed earnings target, can derail these small-cap stocks in a heart beat. But if you have some capital that you want to roll the dice with, these stocks will give you a good start in your research.  [more]

4 "RIGHT NOW" Short Setups

January 25, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DKS , PTEN , CBL

Here are four charts that I believe make for excellent shorting opportunities at this very moment. The key variable is whether the market will cooperate with these stocks in the process and drive them lower. I would have liked to of pulled the trigger on all four of these right at the market open, but considering how blindly the bulls are willing to buy nearly every dip in this market, I settled only for a new short position in EXPD at $53.26. But should the bears managed to hold their own here, I could add the remaining three to the portfolio.   [more]

12 Stocks That Only Go Up

January 21, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: TICC , TPCG , ILMN

This is by far, one of my favorite stock screens that I run. I have probably found more winning stocks (and big % ones at that) off of this screen, than any other one that I run. These stocks make it a habit to trade on their own merits and not that of the market itself. They are often overlooked, but to those who invest their capital in these stocks, the returns that the investors receive are very rewarding. So if you've been scratching your head recently as to what stocks you should be trading, then the stocks below are probably just what the doctor ordered. However, I do not recommend you going out and buying each and everyone of the stocks listed. S&P Snapshot Shows Resistance Overhead

January 21, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

We've seen narrow channels and we've seen wide channels, and we've seen channels within channels as we made our way up to 1300 on the S&P. With that being said, there could be another developing channel that is taking place, and that is on the intra-day charts. Now at this point, it is pure speculation, but I would not be surprised if we see some over head resistance as we start approaching the 1288-1290 level on the S&P as marked by the yellow line just above current price action on the chart. If so, that may be a good sign or opportunity for you to start taking some profits off the table on your long positions.   [more]

The Daily Long and Short Setup

January 20, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: UTX , DGWIY

So it wasn't the bounce the bulls were hoping for, and it wasn't the downward follow through the bears were anticipating! So there is a lot of mixed signals that we got from the S&P today. For starters, we bounced nicely off the 200-day moving average, but we also closed below the 10-day moving average for the first time in 35 market sessions and the last time this happened was in November, which saw an extended move to the 50-day MA. In my opinion, I would say that this tie goes to the bears still. But I am fully aware that I could be proven easily wrong on this theory. Nonetheless, my stops are extremely tight, and should the market rally, I'll still be in good shape.   [more]

At the close on Friday, I proceeded to close out all eight existing positions in my portfolio. But let me be clear, I'm not some dooms-and-gloom guy calling for a market crash on Tuesday or any day in the near future. NYSE Reversal Indicator is starting to finally hit some extremes - the market has made a good run of it since the indicator bottomed back in late November, and there is a legit chance that there is still more room for the market to go even higher. However, I for one, believe that the risk increases exponentially compared to the profit that is still to be had at this point, so caution should be given to any trade that you are going into. Being very nimble, and able to get out of your trades when it becomes necessary is definitely of utmost importance at this point.   [more]

Don't Throw The Pick-Six When Trading

January 14, 2011 – Comments (2)

In the game of football, one of the most disastrous plays is when the offense is on the goal line ready to score, and instead punching it in for seven points, the quarterback drops back to throw the ball, and gets intercepted, which then gets taken to the end zone by the defensive player. Not only has the offense failed to score seven points, but they have also allowed the defense, which was on the ropes, and on the verge of surrendering to the offense, to take the ball the opposite direction and scores seven points of their own. As a result, you have a 14-point swing in the game (seven that the defense scored and the seven that the offense failed to score). At this point, the entire outlook on the game is changed, the opposing team has found new life, and if they were losing at the time, now has the chance to win the game. Even a field goal would have been much better (which would have at least netted a +3 on the scoreboard).  [more]

January 10, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: OUTR , TIE.DL , EBAY

Its looking a little bearish out there to start the week. I wouldn't say though that the bears have shown me enough conviction to rule out an afternoon rally. Nonetheless, I need to be a good Boy Scout and always be prepared. With that said, I have 9 short setups to take a look at.   [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

January 09, 2011 – Comments (0)

It may be as early as next week that we see this indicator show a reversal on the horizon. If that's the case, then I would begin scaling back on your long positions, and perhaps even begin looking for short opportunities...though be very selective at doing that, and don't rush into things too quickly. The trend is still up in this market, but I believe it is necessary to begin looking for signs that this market just may be ready for a pullback in the near term.   [more]

28 Stocks That Are Gaining Momentum

January 07, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: TSL , MRVL , GILD

This screen here is useful for finding those stocks starting to catch some momentum to the upside. This is similar to its sister-screen that I call "Stocks That Are Breaking Down" (but just the exact opposite). A lot of these stocks are positioned for breakouts in the near future. If you are a momentum trader, you have to take a look at the charts of each of these stocks listed below.  [more]

S&P Numbers to Watch

January 07, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

I've provided you a chart below showing how the S&P is essentially range bound, and that I would use a break below 1263 and a high of 1278 for determining the short-term sentiment of this market.

Here's the S&P Intra-Day Chart

12 Breakout Plays I Am Watching Today

January 07, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: RFMD , EEP , FDX

Here's today's  breakout plays that I am watching today. Of most interest to me is the setup in RF Micro Devices (RFMD). If it hits, it should see a nice strong move upwards. If not....well...that's what stop-losses are for. There are about 11 others included in the charts below, so be sure to check them out.   [more]

Don't Trade Like Brett Favre

January 06, 2011 – Comments (1)

There are a lot of similarities between sports and trading the financial markets. Yes, I am aware that one is a physical grind, while the other, you essentially are sitting in a chair and clicking on a mouse button all day long. But the mental aspects are very similar, so what I'd like to do in the coming days is highlight those similarities. In doing so, I will take different athletes, concepts, etc. and show you how they apply to trading and how they can help you to be better at controlling the psychological aspects of the trade.   [more]

Stocks Selling at a Huge Discount

January 06, 2011 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: HAWKQ , TNP , GNW

Here's one of your more traditional "Buffett-like" stock screens where I am essentially looking for companies selling well below their book value. With the market getting hammered lately, it would be nice to find those stocks that have minimal downside risk, based purely on company valuation. The stocks below represent sixcompanies that are trading at less than half its book value.  [more]

Long MWV At $27.18

January 06, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: MWV

My one and only trade this morning. Good chance that this is it for my buying today. I am a little bit concerned that the market just can't see any kind of follow through after Monday's rally - not to mention gold is down and the dollar is up. Just a lot of things causing me to scratch my head some. So there's a good job that I may end up doing some house cleaning in my portfolio before the day it out.   [more]

20 Trade Setups To Watch This Morning

January 06, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: VVUS , MWV , BBT

I hate to bombard you all with an obscene amount of charts - but I have no choice but to do so. I plan on sitting out the first 30 minutes at least of trading, as I have plenty of positions to work with, and don't want to add more if this market doesn't have the desire to stay in positive territory. But as always - I'll alert you all to any trades that I make.   [more]

S&P Trying To Breakout

January 05, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

We've been range bound since Monday, stuck between the gap-up lows and the highs from that very same day. Since then, price has been contained within these barriers. But heading into afternoon trading, we are finally seeing some signs of life from this market, recovering off of sessions lows, when it looked like the bulls might be taken out to the woodshed, and now we may have fresh rally highs.   [more]

20 Stocks that are Breaking Down

January 05, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ANV , VLCM , KATE

We've seen a hint of selling here in the past few days that is leading some to believe that we may be hitting a short-term high in this market. I personally think that is way to premature, and at the very least we need to start seeing some damage done to the technicals - which at this point, hasn't even come close to happening. However, if you are looking to hedge your portfolio, or believe that there is some opportunity to be had on the downside, then look no further then the list of stocks I've provided you with  here.    [more]

12 Stocks Ready For A Short Squeeze

January 04, 2011 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: CBZ , WIBC , BPI

Below is a list of small-cap stocks that have been heavily shorted by the street, and should the market continue to rally, these stocks could see their  share price launch into the stratosphere (if they haven't begun so already) because of the bears being forced to cover their short positions in the stock. Based on the number of shares that are being borrowed, for some of these stocks, it could take as many as 50-70 days to cover all the shares held short in the individual stock.

If you don't know what a short squeeze is, that is where a stock starts to rise rapidly, and as the trend continues to escalate, the short sellers will likely want out. For example, say a stock rises 5% in one day, those with short positions may be forced to liquidate and cover their position by purchasing the stock. If enough short sellers buy back the stock, the price is pushed even higher.  [more]

It's A Gold Flush

January 04, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: GLD

...Yet I am long at $135.44 after it tested the 50-day moving average and the current trend-line. The risk is minimal at this point - a break below $132.80 and you'll want to bail out. But I think, especially with the panic we are seeing in it right  now, that it has probably seen the worst already. I'm looking for a $3-4 move before taking my peanuts somewhere else.  [more]

11 Resolutions for 2011

January 03, 2011 – Comments (1)

Every year millions of people are making New Years resolutions and most of them are not even kept beyond the first week. For traders, resolutions are very important, or at least the establishing of new goals and expectations of one's self in lieu of the trading year ahead This vastly important to the improvement and sustainability of one's trading career. So, I've gone through all my trades of the past year, both good and bad ones, and have a number areas that I believe that I can improve upon. Some of them you may think, "I can't believe he struggles with that!" or perhaps you may have expected goals with more in-depth meaning. Fact of the matter is, often times what traders struggle with are so simple in nature, that the only thing that stands in the way of avoiding those bad habits is one's self, in the form of discipline.   [more]

17 Stocks That Only Go Up

January 03, 2011 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: TICC , TIBX , DLTR

This is by far, one of my favorite stock screens that I run. I have probably found more winning stocks (and big % ones at that) off of this screen, than any other one that I run. In fact, TICC, mentioned below, is one that appeared on this screen about five months ago, and I bought it at $8.77/share, and closed it out at 10.31 while paying out an annual 10% dividend. And now it is providing an intriguing risk/reward setup where, I would close out the stock on a close below 10.79. Another stock that is intriguing to me is Tibco Software (TIBX) after a huge sell-off, it managed to hold support, and could be looking at bouncing here in the near term.   [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

January 02, 2011 – Comments (0)

Despite two weeks now of market  action that seems to barely have a heart beat, it is still holding gains at the highs, and setting up nicely for perhaps another big rally to start the month, much like we saw back on 12/1. Purely speculation at this point, but the charts have managed to work off some of its overbought conditions, and coiled nicely at its highs just waiting to pop. Only Monday will tell.  [more]
