11 Stocks Prime For Shorting

March 31, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: PKD , JCI , VSEA.DL

The screen below are for those stocks that have primarily been on a solid uptrend of late, but are starting to show signs of breaking down along with a loss of interest by the street as a whole. So if you are looking to short this recent market rally, use the list below as bit of a primer to get your bearish energies flowing. Most of these stocks look pretty good when just looking at price and volume from a long-term perspective, however, what is concerning is some of the glaring bearish divergences that are popping up. One such indicator is the Time Segmented Volume - TSV that shows all of the stocks below in the negative, which is a good indicator that the longs are starting to get a bit skittish in their current positions, and are taking profits as a result.  [more]

My Top Big-Cap Stock Plays

March 30, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: HD , GG , E

Here is my list of top defensive plays going into April. If you're looking for some nice defensive stocks to go along with the rest of your long positions in the portfolio, then take a look at the list of stocks below that are more defensive than growth oriented. They are stocks that shouldn't see a lot of volatility and won't fall through the floor, should this market experience some additional selling going forward. In essence, these stocks represent a good balance of companies that are dependable, stable, usually collect a respectable dividend and hold their value all at the same time.  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indiciator

March 30, 2011 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

It has been a long road for the  bears these days, and could get even longer based on what we are seeing with the NYSE Reversal Indicator. The tops on this chart signals quite decisively turns in the market, but those turns happen for only a short period of time these days as bad news tends to get priced in instantly and not over a period of time. So going forward, if you are short this market 1) I extend to you my sympathies - I too, have experienced before that horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach 2) Start covering your positions, and begin entertaining opportunities to the long side.  [more]

There are stocks trading at its peak and finally showing some vulnerability, while on the other extreme, there are stocks that have been in a channel near or at their lows, before finally breaking down below those lows.  [more]

Weekly Digest

March 27, 2011 – Comments (0)

Looks like we had another big week for the bulls as they put in gains of almost 3% across the board.  The Nasdaq led the race with technology seeing the biggest performance gain out of the sectors.  The last time the market put in gains of this strength was the week of 01/31/11.  The markets were able to complete a full recovery from the bad news of Japan and Libya.  The days of being a bear remain short lived as market drops are quickly paired off with gains.  All of the markets were able to reclaim the 50 day moving average and break out of a downtrend this week.  By the bulls being able to hold the 50 day moving average we could see further strength in these markets.  As I said before, technology and basic materials led this week with financial and healthcare bringing up the bottom.  One thing to take note is that we did see some sell off in the markets today.  In fact, if viewed on an hourly chart the market was in a steady downtrend the entire day.  With a lot of bad news coming out on the weekends it appears people are tired of holding positions into a weekend full of uncertainty.  I would expect the money to come back in next week.  [more]

17 Lottery Stocks Under $10

March 25, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: PWER.DL.DL , FCEL , SSN

Unlike any of my other screens, this screen focuses on stocks trading under $10/share, and have a market cap of around $1 billion or less. As for the variables that I used in the screen, I focused on fundamentals, particularly companies that have a healthy balance sheet with little debt to speak of, with a strong prospect for rapid sales and growth in earnings, as well.

Now be aware, that these kinds of stocks carry huge risks to them. A simple downgrade, news event, or missed earnings target, can derail these small-cap stocks in a heart beat. But if you have some capital that you want to roll the dice with, these stocks will give you a good start in your research.  [more]

10 Stocks Ready For A Short Squeeze

March 22, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: AM.DL2 , CONN , CTCT

Below is a list of small-cap stocks that have been heavily shorted by the street, and should the market continue the rally from the past few days, these stocks could see their  share price launch into the stratosphere (if they haven't begun so already) because of the bears being forced to cover their short positions in the stock. Based on the number of shares that are being borrowed, for some of these stocks, it could take as many as 80+ days to cover all the shares held short in the individual stock.

If you don't know what a short squeeze is, that is where a stock starts to rise rapidly, and as the trend continues to escalate, the short sellers will likely want out. For example, say a stock rises 5% in one day, those with short positions may be forced to liquidate and cover their position by purchasing the stock. If enough short sellers buy back the stock, the price is pushed even higher.  [more]

Short SKS at $11.55

March 22, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SKS.DL2

I took a short position in Saks  Holdings (SKS) at at $11.55 today as it is clearly looking to move lower in the short-term. On the daily you have a breach of some serious price support, coupled with a double top and a break of the 100-day moving average. On the weekly, SKS is breaking below the 20-week moving average, something it has consistently found support at in the past. On the 30-minute chart the stock is in a perpetual down trend for most of March. As a result we have a scenario, that should the market resume its downward ways of old, we'll see a quick move to the lower $11's and possibly even the $10's.   [more]

I allocated some more of my portfolio to SPY on the pop that we are seeing this morning at $129.81. Between 1300 and 1302 there is a lot of technical resistance that should cause some headaches for the bulls to push through. NYSE Reversal Indicator

March 06, 2011 – Comments (0)

We had three significant reversals on the daily charts last week, which, frankly, makes trading much more difficult when holding positions over night and allows for undisciplined traders to get beat up pretty good on both sides of the trade. These are the times where you don't want to be forcing your trades upon the market - because you'll lose the great majority of the time. Instead, let the market provide you with those opportunities, and when they occur pounce on them. Most importantly, don't stubbornly hang on to positions that are not responding well to the market action and instead dump them at the first opportunity you get. Being light and nimble and most importantly securing your profits is by far the best approach to trading this market in the short term.  [more]

9 Stocks That Only Go Up

March 03, 2011 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: TICC , PPO , TSCO

This is by far, one of my favorite stock screens that I run. I have probably found more winning stocks (and big % ones at that) off of this screen, than any other one that I run. These stocks make it a habit to trade on their own merits and not that of the market itself. They are often overlooked, but to those who invest their capital in these stocks, the returns that the investors receive are very rewarding. So if you've been scratching your head recently as to what stocks you should be trading, then the stocks below are probably just what the doctor ordered. However, I do not recommend you going out and buying each and everyone of the stocks listed. Instead put each of these stocks in a watch-list and wait for a minor pull-back to a significant support-level.  [more]

Long LSCC At $6.76

March 03, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: LSCC

My setup in Lattice Semiconductor Corp. (LSCC) triggered today when it broke through $6.75, and I got filled at $6.76. I'm using a stop loss of $6.52 which is just below the days lows. The reason for this is because A) it was the closest support level that I could find, and B) if the stock on a day like today, dips below the day's lows, I'll want to be out of this play, if not well before then. So the stop for me makes sense. Now if we can only see some upward momentum out of this stock, now that it has broken through support on an intraday basis!  [more]
