4 Long Setups In An Unwavering Bull Market

March 27, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: JDSU , JEC , WAG

Typically I give a few short trades, but with the market bouncing yesterday, and what that has indicated in the past, I figure we will probably see further upside before we see a significant pullback. If that doesn't happen, and we start giving up the gains today or tomorrow that we made yesterday (i.e. fill yesterday's gap), that could be a sign that things may begin to start rolling over. However, that is neither in the here nor now of today's market, and what we got going on currently is a market that is unwavering and unrelenting.  [more]

Just Maybe This Market Breaks...Here are 4 Short Setups

March 21, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: AES , CCJ , SUG.DL2

Looking at my short scans, and yes they can seem quite futile in these types of markets, two industries with the most well defined bearish patterns and that are appearing the most often are the energy stocks and utilities. I've included four charts below of short setups that you can take if this market does indeed rollover sometime between now and the next two millennia.   [more]

3 Longs and a Little Short

March 19, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: S , F , BRCM

You have Apple (AAPL) finally giving out a dividend, and the market is rather muted today. Most of the charts I'm looking at, I'd say 2/3's of them are completely parabolic. When you have that, it makes it very hard to find any descent setups, either long or short. Nonetheless, I still found some charts that I really liked and in particular Ford (F) once it decides to break out.   [more]

The Happy Friday Swing-Trades

March 16, 2012 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: HSH , BBY , ED

While it would be easy to focus solely on long-only setups, the fact of the matter is, this market is getting overheated faster than a Chevy Volt. That doesn't mean it won't continue to run higher, but it does mean you want to start paying closer attention to the likelihood of this market running much further from current prices without a pullback first. With that said I split the long and short setups for you to take a stab at.   [more]

4 Swing Trade Setups To Hop On

March 14, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: PLL , FITB , NEM

So far the market is holding its gains from yesterday quite well. We might be slightly in the red, but there isn't a sense of profit taking from the masses. In terms of news that could shake a market at its core, soaring oil prices, four more fringe European countries about to follow Greece's default path, Middle East tensions and heightened inflation risk domestically doesn't seem to be worrisome to the bulls. So what else possibly could?   [more]

SharePlanner Reversal Indicator

March 12, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

Of the last 10 weeks in the market, 9 of them have finished in positive territory - a streak we haven't seen since the September 2010 bottom. The only difference between the last time and this time is that the former was coming off of a significant sell-off & market bottom, while this one started after forming a higher-low. Not sure what to make of that, but figured it was worth mentioning.   [more]

Why the Short Put Spread on the Russell was a good idea

March 10, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: IWM

Last week one of our traders decided to go short on some March RUT Put Spreads. He saw the 200 day moving average acting as good support so selling a put below that would be ideal. If memory serves, I believe we were looking at the 750/740 put spread. That is selling the 750s and buying the 740s. Luckily the selling occured on a downward move securing a premium of .68 ($68), or a 7.29% return on margin.  [more]

15 Defensive Stock Plays

March 07, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: TGT , TJX , IBM

I've put together a list of stocks - large cap ones - that have held up very well over the past year. Most of them pay a dividend, and even during the months of August-October of last year, did a great job keeping its value relatively steady. There are a few retail stores that were surprising to me in the sense that they made the list (TGT & TJX), however their charts and solid uptrend in place leads me to believe that they will also hold their own once we see a notable correction in this market.   [more]

Trading Diamond Offhsore (DO)

March 06, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DO

DO continues to consolidate in a tight range between 69.30 and 67.88.  It is meeting resistance from the swing close on Oct of 2011, broken support from the summer of 2010 and its downtrend from the summer of 2010.   Short-term support for DO has been at the 67.80's level with DO bouncing off this level over the last few days.    Right now DO is confused where to go after breaking out in the middle of February it has since consolidated near its highs.  It has formed a short-term bearish descending triangle but also has the potential to develop a bull flag pattern.   The descending triangle pattern is the more dominate pattern right now, with DO sitting at support it has a measured move of 2 and potentially send DO to 65.97, which is right around short-term support which comes from the short chopping pattern around 66.21 from a week ago which makes this level a more likely price target for the pattern. .  The bull flag is only still in play if it remains in its channel and trends lower following that track.  If DO breaks below 67.00 in the next two days that pattern is voided.    [more]

Understanding the TRIN and How To Trade Off Of It

March 05, 2012 – Comments (0)

TRIN is one of those indicators that shows a broader perspective on the markets and looks deeper into the underlying market action than what is seen by simply looking at the chart of the S&P or any other index.

Essentially, the TRIN is taken by calculating the following:

(advancing stocks/declining stocks)/(advancing volume/declining volume)

Now this isn't something that you have to calculate by hand. In fact most trading platforms should do this for you. For example on ThinkorSwim it is "$TRIN" and you get it.

So what the TRIN does is allow for you to figure out whether it's the bulls or bears winning the day when trading by determining whether more volume is going into advancing issues, or more volume is going into declining issues (i.e. stocks). When it is the former the TRIN is below "1" when it is the latter the TRIN stays above (by the way the TRIN is sometimes call the "Arms Index" after its founder)

However, the way I was taught was to not look at whether the TRIN is above or below the "1.0" but 1) how it is trending and 2) The level of extremes that it is reporting  [more]

Six Swing-Trades In A Tired Market

March 05, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: BIG , DENN , MUR

The biggest thing I've seen this morning is that despite a strong ISM Non-Manufacturing reading the market has essentially shrugged off the positive news. At this point, the market is beginning to remind me of that tired, cranky child, who, at the very least, needs a nap, but fights with everything it has to keep from falling asleep. The only thing is that the baby usually conks out hard suddenly and out of nowhere.   [more]

SharePlanner Reversal Indicator

March 04, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY , IWM , QQQ

Another week of gains for the indices (unless you are the Russell of course) while there is a huge disconnect between the SharePlanner Reversal Indicator and the Market itself. At some point the divergence between the SPRI (including every name worthy indicator) and the broader markets is going to cause a break in one or the other. With the Russell starting to break down this week (and let me remind you, they led all the other indices on the way up), I expect it to be equities that ultimately break.   [more]
