NYSE Reversal Indicator

April 30, 2011 – Comments (0)

It would be easy to assume that because the indicator is pointing down that we have selling ahead of us. But because the reversal signal is occuring in the middle of the range and not at the extremes, it cannot be trusted. As a result my approach is to continue to trade this market higher, and when we finally do hit an extreme on the indicator below is when I'll start looking for the more traditional pullback that we typically get at those levels.  [more]

Neither of the plays below do I have a position in yet, but I am closely watching VIP for a break at $14.61, which it is getting very close to hitting as of this writing. CATY (the short setup) has a lot of potential as well, I'm just not a huge fan of shorting anything in this market. But nonetheless, I want to give you two different trades on two different sides. Because who knows....maybe you are one of those looking at adding some short positions to your portfolio.  [more]

GOOG - Descending Wedge

April 28, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: GOOGL

GOOG broke down from the very large rising channel recently, and I drew in the broadening descending wedge when it broke support, though sadly I didn't short it at the time. As you can see it fell to the lower trendline perfectly and reversed there. Targets for this counter-trend bounce are at the strong resistance level in the 551-4 area, and if that is cleared then the upper trendline would be in the 565 - 570 area depending on the time taken to reach it. If the upper trendline breaks then the pattern target would be at the 630 resistance level.  [more]

33 Big-Cap Stock Plays

Here is my list of top defensive plays going into April. If you're looking for some nice defensive stocks to go along with the rest of your long positions in the portfolio, then take a look at the list of stocks below that are more defensive than growth oriented. They are stocks that shouldn't see a lot of volatility and won't fall through the floor, should this market experience some additional selling going forward. In essence, these stocks represent a good balance of companies that are dependable, stable, usually collect a respectable dividend and hold their value all at the same time.  [more]

One more long position for today, and this will likely do it for me in terms of new positions. But the double bottom in Applied Materials (AMAT), coupled with a clean breakout opportunity, sucked me right into this trade here. The technology sector continues to perform well, and that is another "plus" going in this stock's favor. My ideal profit target is around $17.00/share - if it hits that level, I'll likely be taking profits, and at the very least, half the position off the table.  [more]

27 Stocks That Are Gaining Momentum

April 26, 2011 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: MSFT , UNTD , AOL

It's time for the weekly momentum gainers that you need to be keeping a close eye on. In particular, I would watch Microsoft (MSFT) which is putting in a nice double-bottom, and at current prices makes for an appealing trade with the opportunity to see it move as high as $28.00. I also like United Online Inc. (UNTD) which is forming this perfect cup and handle pattern. Though it failed to hold the breakout level, it is still a valid play at $6.57.

This is similar to its sister-screen that I call "Stocks That Are Breaking Down" (but just the exact opposite). A lot of these stocks are positioned for breakouts in the near future. If you are a momentum trader, you have to take a look at the charts of each of these stocks listed below. Each of the stocks below were hand-picked from a list of screen returns of more than 100 stocks/ETF's. These are the ones that I would consider the best of the best from those returns.  [more]

Round and round we go...

April 25, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

Quick little market update for this Monday night.  Both the Dow and S&P 500 finished down while the Nasdaq finished up today.  The S&P finished down a mere -.16% which isn't anything to brag about for the bears.  On Friday the market managed to push its way back up into the consolidation range which is outline on the chart above by the purple lines.  Now we can all see what happened last time we were stuck in this zone.  Market chopped for what seemed like forever before finally breaking lower.  It took the bulls two full days to undo everything the bears were accomplishing.  Now before the bulls start celebrating they still need to conquer 1340.  A break of this strong resistance will confirm the cup and handle pattern forming and push this market higher.   [more]

10 Stocks Ready For A Short Squeeze

April 25, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: LNET , CONN , SYNA

Below is a list of small-cap stocks that have been heavily shorted by the street, and should the market continue to rally, these stocks could see their  share price launch into the stratosphere (if they haven't begun so already) because of the bears being forced to cover their short positions in the stock. Based on the number of shares that are being borrowed, for some of these stocks, it could take as many as 50-70 days to cover all the shares held short in the individual stock.

If you don't know what a short squeeze is, that is where a stock starts to rise rapidly, and as the trend continues to escalate, the short sellers will likely want out. For example, say a stock rises 5% in one day, those with short positions may be forced to liquidate and cover their position by purchasing the stock. If enough short sellers buy back the stock, the price is pushed even higher.  [more]

The other setup is BBT which is seeing a ton of overhead of resistance after breaking through it on Friday with strong volume.  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

April 23, 2011 – Comments (0)

The market has been all over the place of late, and the NYSE Reversal Indicator is showing exactly as much. There hasn't been, for the better part of this year any concrete direction that the market is taking and as a result, we get a few good weeks in one direction before quickly reversing course in the opposite direction. While the NYSE reversal indicator is reversing this past week to the downside, I would say that is mere noise until we hit an extreme on the indicator in one direction or the other. Reversals at this stage, either up or down, typically are head-fakes or false warnings, and usually likes to go back in the original direction it was taking before the mid-stream reversal, like the one we are seeing below.  [more]

22 Lottery Stocks Under $10

Unlike any of my other screens, this stock screen focuses on stocks trading under $10/share, and have a market cap of around $1 billion or less. As for the variables that I used in the screen, I focused on fundamentals, particularly companies that have a healthy balance sheet with little debt to speak of, with a strong prospect for rapid sales and growth in earnings, as well.

Now be aware, that these kinds of stocks carry huge risks to them. A simple downgrade, news event, or missed earnings target, can derail these small-cap stocks in a heart beat. But if you have some capital that you want to roll the dice with, these stocks will give you a good start in your research.  [more]

What I See...

April 20, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

As of this writing the S&P is up 1.38%, Dow at 1.5%, and Nasdaq up 2.01%.  Clearly the day is in the bulls favor with no signs of slowing down.  The markets have erased everything lost on Monday when the U.S. was downgraded.  On a trend day like this the markets will have a big up candle in the open and then slowly melt up the rest of the day.  The melt up makes it so the market doesn't chop but also means that if you didn't buy in yesterday you've missed the big run up.  The problem with missing the big run up is the urge to chase all of these high-flying stocks.  Days with big movement create big emotion which makes for bad trades - don't give yourself headaches by chasing.  On days like today we just enjoy sitting back and riding the wave higher.  Currently our portfolio is up 2% so we are content with letting it ride for the rest of the day especially since this is an established trend day.  The recommendation here for getting into new positions is to wait for tomorrow as this will give the market time to digest what happened today and make a more sound move going forward.  [more]

15 Stocks That Are Gaining Momentum

NYSE Reversal Indicator

April 17, 2011 – Comments (1)

Speaking to a number of different traders lately, I can tell that this market is beginning to irritate a large number of  you, as the consolidation from the past couple of weeks, means numerous head fakes in both directions, where opening gaps in either direction has little to do with where the market plans on actually finishing up at. With that said, I think the recovery we saw on Thursday, and the follow through on Friday (albeit a difficult one), is boding well for stocks, and leads me to believe we are more likely than not to see some positive movements this week.   [more]

Unfortunately my normal Weekly Digest file has been corrupted and will take the weekend to rebuild.  So now we offer the trimmed down Weekly Digest report.  S&P, Dow, and Nasdaq are all down for the week but were able to all bounce back only losing little overall ground.  The markets faced strong selling on Monday followed by consolidation and finally a solid bounce on Friday.  Markets had trouble holding their 50 day moving average but were able to reclaim it today.  So far we are still chopping around but have moved it from an intraday chop to a daily chop which is tradable.  We've already started seeing breakouts and bounce plays working again, so hopefully that trend will continue into next week.  With daily chop you just need to be careful with holding to long into the next day which is better than worrying about holding for only the next hour.   [more]

This is by far, one of my favorite stock screens that I run. I have probably found more winning stocks (and big % ones at that) off of this screen, than any other one that I run. These stocks make it a habit to trade on their own merits and not that of the market itself. They are often overlooked, but to those who invest their capital in these stocks, the returns that the investors receive are very rewarding. So if you've been scratching your head recently as to what stocks you should be trading, then the stocks below are probably just what the doctor ordered. However, I do not recommend you going out and buying each and everyone of the stocks listed. Instead put each of these stocks in a watch-list and wait for a minor pull-back to a significant support-level.  [more]

SD, RAX, FR and AXP On The Watch For This Week

April 11, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: FR , AXP , RAX

SD - Sandridge Energy - I had successful trades with SD in the past and it seems ready for another move higher considering the strong trend that it's on and a pullback nicely to the 10MA. The trigger resistance is $13.09 with support at $12.62.  [more]

Long ADBE At $34.40

April 11, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ADBE

I've Made one new trade so far today, not including my stop-out in Ford (F) at $15.14. I went long Adobe (ADBE) at $34.40. So far so good, if the market can keep from dropping lower today, the stock should continue to progress nicely, particularly if the volume levels we are seeing so far today can keep improving. I expect to hold this stock 1-2 days max. I've placed my stop loss at $33.93. Let's get after it!  [more]

Trading is Easy

April 09, 2011 – Comments (0)

In simple terms, trading is definitely easy. Trading can be accomplished from someone who manages a million dollars using all the latest technology to someone trading off of a laptop with $50 to their name. The simple act of buying and selling can be accomplished from whoever has the will to push the button.  [more]

15 Stocks Breaking Down

April 08, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DELL , BTX , GVA

The stocks below are showing signs of, or already in the process of, breaking down as the smart money appears to be leaving them in a subtle manner. There are stocks trading at its peak and finally showing some vulnerability, while on the other extreme, there are stocks that have been in a channel near or at their lows, before finally breaking down below those lows.  [more]

Long GFI At $18.33

April 08, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: GFI

I took a long position at $18.33 on a nice cup and handle breakout with a stop at $17.97. The market this morning is trying to get back to that 1332 trading range, and seems absolutely magnetized to that number which also represents the previous lower-high.Overall today and for this week as well, the market is very lethargic and seems unable to find any buyers or sellers to significantly move this market some some direction.  [more]

When All Else Fails - Go Boring

April 07, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: TLAB , ALB , RA

The general tone I am getting from a lot of traders these past few weeks is that of frustration.  Many are getting "whip sawed" around in their positions.  Lots of stories about 1.) breakouts that just "wont go" and end-up as disappointing head fakes, and 2.) intraday reversals taking them out right @ their stops, just to turn right back in the other direction...FMT!  [more]

Chop, Chop, CHOP

April 06, 2011 – Comments (1)

Market continues to chop its way to no where  Right now the market is sitting at 1335 which is where it opened up at.  In the morning the bulls started a nice run that looked like it was headed for a break of resistance.  Unfortunately, the bulls quickly gave that dream up and the market began to sell back off.  Bears took us down to fill the gap from this morning's open and now we have moved back up to the open.   [more]

The Daily Long and Short Setup

April 05, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: HL , FLEX

Interesting day in the market as once again, as the market formed a doji around the 1332 level on the S&P. We've see this occur a few times near the highs of late, and what typically happens is we ultimately move higher, and that is what I believe will eventually occur here. So right now, I'd consider the market to be consolidating before another likely  move higher.  [more]

25 Stocks That Are Gaining Momentum

April 05, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: HL , DAN , ATHN

Its time for the weekly momentum gainers that you need to be keeping a close eye on. This week, there are about 25 stocks that some intriguing appeal to them. The one I like best is probably Hecla Mining (HL). If it can breat $9.53, we could see a very nice move out of this silver miner.

[more]

Trading the Euro

April 05, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ULE , URR

There is a possible buy zone shaping up in the Euro.  If we can get down to the 1.4075-1.4095 area sometime today I would look to get long with a stop below the most recent pivot low of 1.4041.  This area could produce a real nice bounce.  Reasons for this trade: the move down from the 1.4249 high has been weak.  You see alot of medium deep to deep retracement, which are bullish.  Down at the box area buy zone you will see a confluence of fib support along with an upward sloping trendline.  If the move lower takes out the 1.4041 level get out.  [more]

Long SVM At $15.05

April 04, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SVM

Market is trying to shake some traders out of their positions in the early going. Not a lot of direction, but I don't find that to be reason not to put on descent long setups in trades that have good risk reward setups. I've added Silvercorp Metals Inc. (SVM) at $15.05 to the portfolio. I'm also watching a few energy plays this morning to with REN, DO, and SU - so there is a good chance you'll see me add one of these plays here shortly as well.  [more]

Cotton Trade

April 03, 2011 – Comments (0)

Cotton has been on an impressive up move since mid 2010 appreciating over 150%.  However, we are starting to see some signs of a possible H&DS top forming.  The chart shows the Left Shoulder, Head, and Right Shoulder have all formed.  We are now just waiting for confirmation, which would be a close below the red neckline.  A mini double top formed and was confirmed Tuesday.  This formation projects down to around 183.00.  If the H&S formation gets confirmed the objective is down to around 151.50.  The LS was formed with an engulfing pattern, the H formed with a shooting star, and the RS formed with a piercing line. All reversals were confirmed with bearish candlestick patterns and shows stiff resistance up at these levels.  We also saw some divergence on the RSI between the LS and H.   [more]

One Long One Short

April 01, 2011 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: XIDEQ , JNJ

XIDE - The stock showed good momentum today despite the flat market. The stock has been rising the last few days on a rising support after a significant pullback to fill the gap. I expect the stock to pullback a little to test support at around 11.00 to 11.06 and probably form a cup and handle pattern on the hourly chart.  [more]
