Dennis Gartman's Rules of Trading

May 29, 2010 – Comments (4)

As the tradition has always been, I try to post an article that I have found during my reading throughout the course of the week that I have found to be of the most interest and directly applicable to my trading. This week's article comes from a guest poster on a site that I frequent daily, call the SlopeOfHope.com. The poster's name is Leisa, and has an unbelievable wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to the markets. Here she has provided a very timely article on Dennis Gartman's trading rules. Everyone one of them is worth heeding and understanding and to break one is at your own peril. There is not a rule on here that I don't try to live and abide by in my daily trading - Consider applying these rules as well to your trading routine - you won't regret it!    [more]

4 Stocks Prime for Shorting

May 28, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: OSTK , ESS , CEB

The stocks below are mainly those stocks that have been on a solid uptrend of late, but are starting to show signs of breaking down along with a loss of interest by the street as a whole. So if you are looking to short this market, use the list below as bit of a primer to get the water flowing. All four stocks (one of them is an ETF, though) are pretty good when just looking at price and volume, however, what is concerning is some of the glaring bearish divergences that are popping up. One such indicator is the Time Segmented Volume - TSV that shows all of the stocks below in the negative, which is a good indicator that the longs are starting to get a bit skittish in their current positions, and will begin looking to take profits in the near future. I've got these stocks added to my short watch list and will watch them for just the right opportunity to initiate a position in.  [more]

Well the bulls finally pulled off a rally and stuck to it through the entire day. Despite a bad jobs and GDP number, there wasn't anything that was going to stop them from finishing in positive territory today. It'll be interesting to see if they can keep building on this rally. If so, I may start to slowly initiate some new short positions in the days ahead if the can keep the momentum going in the mean time.  [more]

S&P's Best Performers for the Past Month

May 27, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DPS

While the market has taken an absolute killing this past month, I thought it would be interesting to see just who has managed to weather the storms the best. In all 20 companies are trading in the green this month. Everyone else is getting shalacked! May God be with you if you happen to own Dean Foods (DF) or Sears (SHLD), both of which are down 30% of the year. And of the 20 stocks listed below, the one that has always impressed me the most is Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) because 1) They are indeed Amazingly Smooth! and 2) Company is under great management 3) stock is breaking out to all-time highs while everyone else is trying to avoid capitulation. Futures, like yesterday are rocking, with the S&P and Nasdaq each seeing gains in excess of 2% heading into the open. Whether those gains can be held throughout the day is any one's guess. A lot of folks thought that after yesterday's afternoon sell-off that the bulls would be demoralized, throw their hands in the air and quit. But this morning they are showing, at least for the time being, that this is definitely not the case. I'll probably use the day to find some opportunities to scalp either the S&P or Nasdaq ETF's.  [more]

So, going forward, I'll try my hardest to do exactly that because, for one, it helps you understand the art of managing the trade, my successes and pitfalls, and secondly, it makes me take a greater in-depth examination of how I handled the trade, when I act like a Monday-Morning Quarterback.  [more]

10 Stocks Trading at a Huge Discount

With the type of market that we are now in, where the upward long-term trend line has been broken and now we are seeing selling that, day-by-day, continues to accelerate at a rapid pace, just how in the world would I want to  put out a bullish stock screen of 10 stocks selling at a significant discount to their book value? One such stock is IDT who has been on a major tear since it was below a dollar. What a week we have had - for the bears it was one for the books - as for me, one of the best couple of weeks of trading that I have ever had. The T2108 shows exactly how oversold we are, and to be initiating new short positions at these levels is boarderline insane, in my opinion. If you are looking to add new short positions to your portfolio, you are better off waiting for this market to work off some of these oversold conditions first so that you can initiate new short positions at much more favorable levels.  [more]

My Approach Right Now to Trading and Shorting

May 20, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: BEZ.DL , NATI , E

These past two weeks have seen some of the best trading gains in my life time. My short positions have performed admirably well in this current market. As of this writing, my portfolio is 69% short still, and 31% in cash. I took profits on my large stake in ENI SPA (E) for a 9.5% gain. I still have positions in Abiomed (ABMD), National Instruments (NATI), and Baldor Electric (BEZ) that I am strongly considering closing out before the end of the day, despite them all being just shy of my target prices. The reason being, for me not waiting for the target prices to hit is because when considering the risk/reward of the market in terms of oversold/overbought and how much I stand to lose if the market bounces from here, versus how close I am to my target prices (meaning very little left to gain in additional profits), it behooves me to close out those particular positions.  [more]

So far so good on the futures in the early morning, as Asia is selling off hard. Gold continues to be the flight to safety option, and crude prices continue to drop hard.

Unless, we get an overnight, change-of-heart, this morning gap down is looking very good for my very-short portfolio. Should we get another sell-off in excess of 20 or 30 points on the S&P, then I will likely be covering a lot of my short positions and moving to cash to wait for a rally of some kind, before reloading once again.

All my stops have remained the same across the board, but like I've already said, should this heavy selling continue into the open and beyond tomorrow, I will start covering these short positions of mine to take profits off the table.

As many of you already know, one of the biggest factors in successful trading is how well you manage the trade - that is the stop-losses you place, the amount of capital that you put to work, where you take profits, and how you protect the profits that you already have. You could, no doubt, write many books on each of these subjects, but for now, I'm going to focus on a small, but critical aspect of risk-management and my inspiration comes from the movie "The Patriot", which happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time.  [more]

The Second Leg of the Great Depression Was Caused by European Defaults

In the article below the author points out that during the Great Depression, the second leg of the downturn, which took the market to its lowest levels was actually caused by European defaults, which didn't surface until the market had made a "V" shaped rebound of 60% off of its original lows (the initial sell-off). This article I found to be truly fascinating.    [more]
