NYSE Reversal Indicator

July 31, 2010 – Comments (0)

A lot of ways to read the current market, as things have become quite muddled in recent weeks. However, as I try to do each and every week, I post the NYSE Reversal Indicator for you to gauge the momentum of the market and as you can see we are starting to once again hit some notable extremes. In an effort to be as simple as possible, I don't get to excited until the "Green" line crosses below the "Red" line. When that happens we tend to get a nice reversal that usually lasts from two weeks and onward.  [more]

9 Stocks That Only Go Up

July 30, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SAM , LCAPA.DL , IDT

The market is just about as unpredictable as it can possibly be right now, and where it goes ultimately is anyone's guess. Despite the bi-polar personality that Mr. Market has been exhibiting lately, the stocks listed below remain on a firm uptrend, and any storm that comes its way, it weathers quite nicely. So if you've been scratching your head lately as to what direction you should be trading, then the stocks below are probably just what the doctor ordered.  [more]

The Death Cross: Is It Credible?

July 28, 2010 – Comments (6)

Much has been made of the recent 50-day moving average that crossed below the 200-day moving average on the S&P. Among individual stocks, when the 50/200 cross occurs to the downside, many traders take it as a sign to get out of the stock immediately, or to start a new short position. With that being said, and the failed attempt, to-date by the bears to drive this market lower in the wake of a the 50/200 death cross, I asked myself, is this even a legitimate phenomenon that we should be paying attention to? Is there a legitimate play that we can take advantage of when this death cross comes about? So I decided to run some tests on my own and here is what I found.   [more]

Understanding Risk and Reward

July 27, 2010 – Comments (1)

One of the most important aspects, and in my opinion, THE MOST IMPORTANT aspect of trading is understanding risk. If you have been following this blog for any length of time, you know that I mention and talk about the risk-reward ratio in everyone of my positions that I take on. With every transaction, whether it is a day-trade or a swing-trade, I use a stop-loss without fail - in fact, I cannot recall the last time I failed to use one. Stop-losses are what keeps me in the game, yeah, they absolutely suck at times, because when you use them, it isn't uncommon to see a position that you have on, go against you, trigger the stop-loss than soar on to new highs. But if I were to add up all of the times that has happened, and the amount of money it cost me, then add up all the times it has saved me from complete portfolio ruin - there is no comparison between the two. In essence, using stop-losses is equivalent to having an insurance policy for your portfolio - it costs money, no one likes using them, but they are absolutely necessary!  [more]

ISLN a Classic "Nicolas Darvas Play"

July 27, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ISLN.DL

This is a classic set up that Nicolas Darvas (old school 1950's trader) constantly spoke of. Check out the volume supporting the breakout, and the subsequent light volume pullback that, maybe, just maybe, will bring this stock back down to the breakout level, which would offer a very nice risk/reward setup. In any case, I don't recommend buying this stock right now, as it appears to have a little more downward momentum left in it. Instead, wait patiently for it to get to the upper-end of the box, where you can minimize risk the most.  [more]

Does Your Charts Look Like This?

July 26, 2010 – Comments (1)

Does Your Charts Look Like This?

Please say it ain't so! But believe it or not, there are a lot of traders out there that have charts that are as convoluted and messy as the chart you see above. I beg and plead with you to adhere to that old adage Keep It Simple Stupid! (K.I.S.S) when it comes to setting up your charts. The main reasons for this is 1) Your sanity 2) Keep conflicting buy/sell signals to a minimum - I can find five or six differing signals just in the chart above for whether you should buy or sell Apple (AAPL) 3) Keep you from getting in and out of trades to quickly (too many indicators telling you too many things will do that!), and 4) Try and specialize at using a handful of indicators (and when I say handful, I mean 2 or 3 tops) - if you can remember these four important reasons, it will keep you and your portfolio out of trouble when you are just dying to add a new indicator to your charts, especially when Mr. So-and-So said it was the best thing since slice bread and it never fails to tell him how he should be trading.   [more]

I do try to limit the size of the company so that there isn't anything like a Wal-Mart or Microsoft included. But all of the companies are 'acquirable' and have solid financials that would make them a luring target for a bigger fish. Not everyone of these will be taken over or any of them at all (in case you were looking for some kind of guarantee), but the point is to get you started on finding some gem of an idea that could lead to a takeover. Who knows? Maybe your best trade of the year lies somewhere in the list below!  [more]

Let's face it...there are tons, and I mean TONS of indicators one can use to trade with. Some of them claim to encompass everything you need in order to make dependable trading decisions - but let me just tell you right off the bat, that such bold claims is complete horse manure. Indicators, in an of themselves, are nothing more than derivatives of price and volume - that is something you MUST realize and that is why I am always pounding on the fact that price and volume should be what you conduct your primary analysis on, and any indicators you use thereafter should only be used in conjunction to support or expose divergences in price and volume.   [more]

S&P Wrecking Havoc On Bears

July 20, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: GS , IBM , TXN

Today Mr. Market has been utterly ruthless on the bears. We gap way down on not-so-great earnings from Goldman (GS), IBM (IBM), and Texas Instruments (TXN), and despite those efforts the bulls manage to, once again, go on a buying spree off of the lows. I warned of a possible gap fill from this morning's trading plan, and while major gap downs (like today's) are always exciting, they often wreck havoc on the trader's positions for those whose portfolio's benefits initially off of the gap. For me too, getting that blasted upgrade from UBS on one of my short positions this morning was like adding insult to injury more than anything.  [more]

I've recently built my own trading computer, which is a first for me because in the past I’ve always settled for an off-the-shelf desktop from a local electronics retailer. However, this time I decided to build my own desktop with custom components. Now, don't think that the better the trading computer, the better trader you will be; instead, think of what type of computer will best support your daily needs as a trader/investor in the financial markets. For example, a Forex trader may need something totally different than a Swing-Trader, and a Futures trader will need something totally different than a long-term investor.  [more]

23 Highest Paying Dividends

July 19, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: ANH , CEL , SLRC

A lot of investors will use market sell-offs like the one we have been experiencing over the past two months, to pick up high-dividend yielding stocks on the cheap. As the stock goes down, assuming they don't cut the value of their dividend in the process, their payout goes up relative to the price per share that you pay. So, it can be said that the time to buy stocks with high dividends couldn't be better, but then again on the other hand, the risk couldn't be greater.

You'll find that the stocks below are sporting some pretty nice dividends, but don't just dive into one of the stocks listed below without doing first the necessary due diligence required. Some of these stocks could see their dividends slashed in the coming months if the market sell-off continues - but no one knows for sure and that is why, with anything, you have to weigh the risk and reward before placing the bet.  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

July 17, 2010 – Comments (2)

The NYSE Reversal Indicator uses the advance/decline ratio with a stochastics overlay. The bottom half of the chart is the weekly candles of the S&P. The chart itself goes back two years. Some folks have criticized me for posting this chart in the past saying that it isn't 100% accurate - but if it was, as some think it must be, then I wouldn't be posting it - I'd save it all for myself and make an ungodly sum of money off of it. But it isn't perfect and there is always a level of error that you can expect from it. But overall, it is fairly accurate, and when the indicator hits certain extremes on the stochastics, it is often a good time to start hedging positions that are going against the direction of the indicators, or start loading up on short or long positions in-line with the direction that the indicator itself is pointing to.  [more]

TICC recently appeared on one of my screens for those stocks that only go up. Now I don't typically talk about stocks worth buying for the long-term but I will say that the financials on this company are pretty sound and makes a good argument for buying.  [more]

16 Stocks Insiders Are Buying

July 12, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ADY.DL2 , CFSG.DL2 , IDT

This particular stock screen I run about once a month as doing it any more frequently wouldn't provide much variation in the results. So what you'll find below are 16 companies that insiders are significant owners of. Some of these stocks, the management owns as much as 81% of the outstanding shares. That means that you have a low-float, and a company's management team that has a HUUUUUGE financial incentive to see their company succeed. When the crap hits the fan, these guys won't cut and run, because their personal stake in the company is too great of a priority of theirs.  [more]

Just Shorted CERN, WTFC & SLAB

July 12, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SLAB , WTFC , CERN

These stocks have all been recent setups that I have posted prior to me actually shorting them today, with CERN this morning, SLAB on Friday, as well as WTFC. The market is showing some weakness early on, and now have 70% of my portfolio committed to the short side after having sold my stake in QQQQ. However, if the market tries to get bullish again between now and the end of the day, I won't hesitate to hedge my portfolio again with a long position in QQQQ or Apple (AAPL).  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

July 11, 2010 – Comments (0)

The NYSE Reversal Indicator uses the advance/decline ratio with a stochastics overlay. The bottom half of the chart is the weekly candles of the S&P. The chart itself goes back two years. Some folks have criticized me for posting this chart in the past saying that it isn't 100% accurate - but if it was, as some think it must be, in order to post then 1) I wouldn't be posting it - I'd save it all for myself, or 2) I would sell it to a major brokerage firm for an ungodly sum of money. But it isn't perfect (I wish it was) and there is always a level of error that you can expect from it. But overall, it is fairly accurate, and when the indicator hits certain extremes on the stochastics, it is often a good time to start hedging positions that are going against the direction of the indicators, or start loading up on short or long positions in respect to the direction that the indicator itself is pointing to.  [more]

How High Can This Market Go?

July 09, 2010 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

Bears are getting a bit nervous in recent days from the broad-based rally the markets have seen since the beginning of the month. The chart below incorporates the use of the Fibonacci retracement tool, which is very useful for measuring/predicting the extent of pullbacks in a bull market or rallies in a bear market. At this point I can't say that I am all that surprised that we've gone as high as we have, thus the reason for why I have been hedging my short positions with one gigantic long one. But as you can see, the 61.8% retracement level will prove to be much more difficult to break through than it was to push through the 50% retracement.  [more]

CBSH As A Short Setup

Here is another short setup that I really like. I'd prefer to see this one sell-off a little bit more - you definitely have some wiggle-room here between the current price, and the perceived stop-loss. So don't be impatient and jump in; instead, let the markets breakdown a bit and then jump in on the short-side.  [more]

21 Stocks Prime for Shorting

July 09, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: TX , TLK , FXI

The screen below are for those stocks that have been on a solid uptrend of late, but are starting to show signs of breaking down along with a loss of interest by the street as a whole. So if you are looking to short this market, use the list below as bit of a primer to get your bearish energies flowing. Most of these stocks look pretty good when just looking at price and volume from a long-term perspective, however, what is concerning is some of the glaring bearish divergences that are popping up. One such indicator is the Time Segmented Volume - TSV that shows all of the stocks below in the negative, which is a good indicator that the longs are starting to get a bit skittish in their current positions, and will begin looking to take profits in the near future. I've got these stocks added to my short watch list and will watch them for just the right opportunity to initiate a position in.  [more]

All the bulls out there will be happy to know that I haven't totally forgotten about them lately (give me credit until today, I held a long position in QQQQ for almost three days straight). This was my short recommendation from yesterday's Daily Long and Short Setup. I decided to take advantage of the morning bullishness this stock was exhibiting. As it stands now, I am currently 11% short on the market. If, or more appropriately, when I sell my long position in QQQQ, I will automatically become 46% short on the market, as I will have no other long positions in my portfolio at that point.  [more]

Hold...HOLD...HOLD!!!

July 07, 2010 – Comments (2)

From time to time, I have to post this video, because it so eloquently (and yes somewhat graphically) captures what all of us bears must do on days where the market runs totally hog-wild, as it did today. If you are a regular, then you know that I am actively hedging my portfolio against this run up, and despite being neutral in my portfolio, I was actually up about .4% on the day - I can't complain that's for sure. I will continue to hedge my portfolio with a large position in the Nasdaq QQQQ as I've held it once again over night just as I have done since last Friday. I have no idea how high or how long this rally will go for, but for now I will patiently wait on the sidelines until the conditions are right again for shorting.  [more]

32 Stocks Trading At A Huge Discount

July 07, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: CNO , CX , CONN

Here's one of you more traditional "Buffett-like" stock screens where you are essentially looking for companies selling well below their book value. Many of these stocks lately have been getting knocked down pretty hard and even some of the more well managed companies are getting extremely cheap relative to their book-price (the value of the company per share, if they were to liquidate all of their assets). There are a number of insurance companies listed, as well as a few shipping companies (which is no surprise considering how much they've been getting hit lately. Beyond those two industries, the rest of them are representative of a broad spectrum of the economy.  [more]

Wrap-Up

July 06, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: QQQ

What started off with a boom, ended as quite a disappointment for the bulls today, giving up almost all of its gains on the day. However, the rally was still enough for me to where I don't want to be net short heading into the open tomorrow. As a result, after having sold my long position in the QQQQ at $43.06 (original entry was at $42.49), I decided to jump back in right at the market close at $42.54 to bring my portfolio back to a neutral bias. The candle pattern formed today was an doji pattern, that I'd prefer to stay away from for now, as I believe the indecision plays to the bulls favor at this point. Once it looks safe to come out and play, I will sell my stake in QQQQ, much as I did today when it became obvious the market was determined to try and close the opening gap.  [more]

Trading for a Loss in Quanex (NX)

July 06, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: NX

Not every trade goes according to one's wishes, but every trade can go according to the plan! How is that? Well let me explain. On 6/25 I had recommended going long in Quanex (NX) with a stop-loss at 17.62. The chart itself was phenomenal. I was short in every other stock I had in the portfolio, and this would be the sole equity that I would be long in. NX was breaking out to all-time highs, had broken through multi-year support in text-book fashion, and had since pulled back ever-so slightly, near the breakout-point offering an EXCELLENT risk/reward setup. One that if I was right on, could go on and see a major move and be perhaps one of my best trades of the year. To say the least, It had been quite a while since I had been this impressed by a long-setup.  [more]

The NYSE Reversal Indicator still managed to continue its upward move, despite this week's pretty destructive market action. 9 Stocks That Only Go Up

It is painfully obvious at this point that the market is in a free-fall mode, and where it bottoms out at is any one's guess. However, there are some stocks, that haven't bowed the knee (yet) to the pressures that Mr. Market is placing on them. Instead, these stocks remain on a firm uptrend, and any storm that comes its way, it weathers it quite nicely. So if you are trying to gear up for the bounce play, hate shorting stocks, or just can't stand being in cash (very bad habit!), then the stocks below are probably just what the doctor ordered.  [more]

Trading Plan for July 2, 2010

July 02, 2010 – Comments (0)

This is a new feature to SharePlanner that I am rolling out as of today, and that is my daily trading plan heading into each market session. This is one of the most important aspects of trading - to not only have an overarching trading plan that guides your way of trading and enforcing discipline, but to also have a daily trading plan, where you sit down and think, preferably write out, the day before you and look at what will be influencing the markets, how you will react to them, and what you expect to do if "ABC" or "XYZ" occurs. Now I understand that a great number of you folks work a regular job (I'm grateful that this is my only job - I couldn't do both!), have families, and other responsibilities which limit you from spending the amount of time that I do in studying the markets, so the thought of taking an extra hour in the morning and mapping out the day before you is not only horrifying to you but probably to your spouse as well.  [more]
