8 Contrarian Stock Plays

August 31, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ZN , EBS , RJET

This is a new stock screen, falling into the defensive category. Basically, these stocks, on average, go up when the market is down and down when the market is up. Not always, but to say the least, they don't tend to trade with the market to any degree of consistency. Essentially these stocks have a negative correlation to the S&P (not to be confused with negative returns). Does that mean you should go out and buy these stocks in a bear market? Not necessarily. Instead these are stocks that you can add to your watch-list and when the setup is right, and there is a good probability of success on the trade, including a positive reward/risk ratio, then you pull the trigger. One more thing worth mentioning is that none of the stocks listed below are UltraShorts of any kind.   [more]

My Trading Software I Use

August 30, 2010 – Comments (0)

About a month or so ago, I wrote a post describing the details of my trading computer. However, as you know, a computer with great hardware setup doesn't mean much unless you have the right software in relation to how you trade. So this here will be the second installment of the "Trading Desk". For future purposes it will be posted in the "Newbies" section found on the menu bar above.  [more]

14 Stocks That Are Breaking Down

August 30, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: EGLE , PPH , LOW

I'm trying to update this particular screen of stocks starting to breakdown, on at least a weekly basis, and preferably right after a descent bounce in the market, that allows for prices in stocks across the board to recover some. So with Friday's rally and today's bearish response, I thought it would be appropriate to re-run this screen again, so that you have ideas-a-plenty for capitalizing on this bear market.  [more]

Daily Long and Short Setup

August 30, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: CRNT , ALNY

Personal Income and Outlays just came out with its affect on the market being overlooked and basically ignored. After Friday's gains, the bulls would no doubt like to see some follow through, but considering the amount of selling the futures has seen since last night's highs in the futures market is somewhat disappointing, that they are looking at a flat open to start the day.

Update On The T2108

August 29, 2010 – Comments (0)

Below is a two-year look at the T2108 Oversold/Overbought indicator. We are still in the mid-range just like we were last week. In fact, there hasn't really been much damage to the prices of stocks from the week prior to this past week. The prior week's reading came in at 50.07, while this week's T2108 is at 47.7. So we are still far from being oversold, and could still see much further downside in the days and weeks to come.

The T2108's purpose is to measure the percentage of stocks trading above their 40-day moving average. There is a little more to it that Worden doesn't disclose, but nonetheless, it is a valuable tool for gauging the overbought/oversold conditions of the market at hand.  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

August 28, 2010 – Comments (0)

Last week has to go down as one of the craziest trading weeks of the year. There was a lot of money gained and lost, and depending on what side of the trade you were on, you either cursed the market or embraced it. If you remained on the sidelines, then you probably were smarter than everyone else! All kidding aside, the market had a lot of opportunities, last week to take advantage of, and while I wasn't fully short on the market last week (on average 55-60% most of the time), I do feel that I did quite well.  [more]

The Bulls Were After The Shorties Today

August 27, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: HSY , SSO

The Bulls were on a mission today - we opened up high, and then sold off on guidance being cut from Intel (INTC) and then what at first seemed to be a negative reaction to Bernanke speaking up at Jackson Hole, reversed course, again at 1037, and finished at 1064 on the day - a gain of 17 points in the positive on the S&P. The volume was strong, which isn't surprising considering the flurry of news out today. I did hedge my portfolio around lunch-time with a large position in SSO (S&P UltraLong) and sold it at the close. As a result, I was only down 0.14% on the day. I closed out my position in Hershey (HSY) - never really took off, and I wasn't too crazy about all the M&A talk going on with them and Nestle, so rather than hold it through Merger Monday, I just got rid of it.  [more]

14 Stocks Trading At A Huge Discount

August 27, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: NTT , CDE , IPSU.DL

Here's one of your more traditional "Buffett-like" stock screens where I am essentially looking for companies selling well below their book value. Despite the rash of selling we've been seeing lately in the markets, these stocks have done a pretty good job of holding their own and the charts on these stocks aren't all that bad either. I have expanded the parameters of the book value from half book value to three-quarters book value (the value of the company per share, if they were to liquidate all of their assets), since a lot of stocks had to be ruled out due to the very bearish charts they had. Those stocks listed below, represent what I feel are the best of the discounted stocks.  [more]

Shorted DDS At $21.57

August 26, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DDS

I went against my trading-plan this morning, of not re-entering any additional short swing-trades today. I ended up selling my shares in EUO, much sooner than where I originally put my stop-loss at (22.78 vs. SL of 22.25). It broke the 50-day moving average, which I didn't like at all, so I bailed for a small loss. In its place, I added a stock that I have been watching for a few days now - Dillards (DDS). Nice downward trend in place marked by lower-highs and lower-lows. Got in just below some major resistance overhead as noted in the chart I marked up. This stock could easily see a dip below $17 if my thesis plays out. But, as always, adhere to a stop-loss of your choosing - I've provided you with mine.   [more]

Long EUO At $23.07

August 23, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: EUO

I don't typically trade in currencies, but the known correlation between a drop in the value in the Euro, rise in the U.S. Dollar, drop in U.S. equities, and my known bearish tilt on the market, makes this an obvious trade . But even more obvious is the downward trend-line on this Euro UltraShort, the inverse H&S pattern in place, and the break of the 50-day moving average. Last time EUO closed through the 50-day moving average, the Euro saw a huge decline in its value. So the risk/reward, is certainly in my favor here with a price target in the mid-$24's and a stop-loss at 22.25.  [more]

The week's early rally off-set for the most part the selling the market saw in the latter part of the week, namely Thursday and Friday. What I would like to see the bears do at this point, and to a large extent has been unsuccessful at, is to see MULTIPLE days where we go down and stay down, and keeping the boot on the bull's neck throughout the entire trading session. I haven't been all that crazy about the slack the bears have been giving them to rally almost every time in the afternoon. Couple of things to note on this one, the first of which is the nice downward channel it is trading in, particularly on the daily and weekly charts. At the moment, that is the main risk that I will be watching in regards to the stock's performance. 15 Highest Paying Dividends

August 18, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: NLY , ANH , AGNC

A lot of investors will use market sell-offs like the one we have been experiencing over the past two months, to pick up high-dividend yielding stocks on the cheap. As the stock goes down, assuming they don't cut the value of their dividend in the process, their payout goes up relative to the price per share that you pay. So, it can be said that the time to buy stocks with high dividends couldn't be better, but then again on the other hand, the risk couldn't be greater.

You'll find that the stocks below are sporting some pretty nice dividends, but don't just dive into one of the stocks listed below without doing first the necessary due diligence required. Some of these stocks could see their dividends slashed in the coming months if the market sell-off continues - but no one knows for sure and that is why, with anything, you have to weigh the risk and reward before placing the bet.  [more]

For both technical and fundamental traders/investors this stock screen carries a lot of importance. Almost every stock out there has at least a firm or two covering them, but even still there are companies here and there that are completely out of sight from the big money. The intriguing part about these companies is that as they continue to increase in value, the street will start noticing, and then all of a sudden, a stock which managed to make it without the help of Wall Street suddenly will be propelled higher and higher once Wall Street jumps on the bandwagon via upgrades and new analyst coverage. NYSE Reversal Indicator

August 14, 2010 – Comments (0)

The bulls took a beating last week, and the NYSE Reverseal Indicator clearly shows as much. In fact, the picture doesn't get any better. Historically when %K and %D lines cross to the downside (explained below), within a matter of a week or two, we get significant and sustained pressures. Only once or twice in the past couple of years has this not occurred, so its warning signal that it is giving us right now, should no doubt be heeded. I scaled out of my long positions on Thursday and Friday, and only kept TICC in the portfolio. Based on how it was able to break through numerous signifcant levels of support last week was amazing, and I believe that there is still more room for the bears to run. It is really incredible how fast market conditions can suddenly change, but when it does, you need to be nimble enough to make your portfolio reflect that.  [more]

20 Stocks That Are Breaking Down

August 12, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: USO , EMC , CSCO

What we have below is a handful of stocks that are showing signs of, or already in the process of, breaking down as the smart money appears to be leaving them in a subtle manner. As I thumbed through the different charts I noticed stocks trading at its peak, and finally showing some vulnerability, and on the other extreme I saw a few stocks that had been in a channel near or at its lows, before finally breaking down below those previous lows.  [more]

22 Defensive Stock Plays

August 11, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: UPS , CHL , NKE

Rough day in the markets for the bulls today, has a lot of people trying to lessen their risk exposure and climb in some more defensive plays like the ones below, that trade with low betas and have managed to keep a healthy chart  over the past few months. They also payout some pretty solid dividends, which will buffer your downside even further.  [more]

Let's Take A Look At The S&P

August 11, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

Very crazy day today, almost as if the bulls finally awoke to what everyone has seemingly known for quite some time now - and that is the economy is in shambles, nothing has changed for years now - despite the stimulus bills totaling trillions (total waste), empty political promises of a better tomorrow and a Fed that has kept rates at record lows for a couple of years now, we are still no better off. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, lets see what the market is trying to tell us. Obviously, last night it had a major change of heart, and has broken through some major support levels without hesitation along with breaking the trendline established back on July 1st .  [more]

Looking At A Failed Gap Trade #4

August 10, 2010 – Comments (0)

This is the not-so-great side of trading the gap: You are right on calling for the gap to be filled, the problem is, the market stops you out before you can realize those profits, and instead you walk away with nothing but a loss. That's the world of trading and that is exactly what happened to mew on 8/3. The trade is shown below.

Trade Setup Performance Review

August 10, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: BTN , COLB , JST

This is the new feature that I started last week, that I got some good feedback on, and that was providing you with a track-record of how my daily morning stock picks performed. I will not evaluate the previous 5 trade setups until next week, when it has some time to establish a performance record. Instead for this write-up, I will focus only on July 28-August 3.  [more]

56 Short Setups with Stop-Losses

August 09, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: OUTR , RGC , FII

Its been a while since I posted my shorting watch-list and you may be wondering "why do have a shorting watch-list when you are 65% Long on the market right now?". The answer to that is easy: the market is ever-changing, and sometimes you have to be prepared to flip the switch and go short and vice versa if conditions suddenly change. So out of practice I always have a running watch-list for both long and short setups - like a good Boy Scout I try to always be prepared, especially for the unexpected. As a note, I am not short any of these stocks right now, they (once again) are simply stocks that I am watching for potential short setups in the future.  [more]

11 Under $10 Lottery Plays

August 09, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: CSR.DL2 , VVUS , CDVI

Unlike any of my other screens, this screen focuses on stocks trading under $10/share, and has a market cap under $1 billion, too. As for the variables that I used in the screen, I focused on fundamentals, particularly companies that have a healthy balance sheet with little debt to speak of, with a strong prospect for rapid sales and growth in earnings, as well. Those in yellow are carry-overs from the last time I ran this screen.

Now be aware, that these kinds of stocks carry huge risks to them. A simple downgrade, news event, or missed earnings target, can derail these small-cap stocks in a heart beat. But if you have some capital that you want to roll the dice with, these stocks will give you a good start in your research.  [more]

Looking At Today's Gap Up #3

August 09, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

At the expense of sounding redundant with my review of "gap-fade" trades, I'll probably only be doing one more post highlighting this trade type. I've had a couple that I went over when you shouldn't trade the opening gap, and below I have a review of today's gap-fade that I partook in successfully this morning. Tomorrow, I will show a past trade (from last week) that didn't go as well, despite following all the criteria shown below. After tomorrow's post, you should have everything you need to make solid and informed decisions when contemplating whether to fade the market open or not.  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

August 07, 2010 – Comments (0)

After yesterday's strong afternoon rally after hitting some major lows on an intraday basis, I think it is still quite clear that the bulls still have control of the market. I expect that this is will be the week that we will test and likely break that 1130 level on the S&P. If that occurs I think that we'll see another phase of short squeezes thereby driving the market even higher. Notice though, that we are at the high end of the range on the NYSE reversal indicator, but historically, that can mean there is still another 2-3 weeks before seeing any substantial selling - but it is definitely worth noting.  [more]

Looking At Today's Gap Down #2

August 06, 2010 – Comments (0)

The market took a surprising dump at about the 10am mark breaking through both the 200-day moving average AND the upward trend line established back on 7/6 - both strong negatives for this market. It wouldn't take much for the market to recapture both of these, but it will need to start making up ground right away.  [more]

Looking At Today's Gap Down

August 05, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

I've received quite a few emails and comments from folks asking about how I trade the gap (when I do) and how do I construct my trade. So I figured we could look at today's open as a case study, even though I didn't trade it this morning (we can talk about that too), what the parameters would have been had I gone through with the trade. I'll try to highlight a few of these over the next couple of weeks, as well as look at some from recent weeks too.  [more]

7 Stocks Prime For Shorting

August 04, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: EEP , TAN , XEL

The screen below are for those stocks that have been on a solid uptrend of late, but are starting to show signs of breaking down along with a loss of interest by the street as a whole. So if you are looking to short this market, use the list below as bit of a primer to get your bearish energies flowing (or what's left of them). Most of these stocks look pretty good when just looking at price and volume from a long-term perspective, however, what is concerning is some of the glaring bearish divergences that are popping up. One such indicator is the Time Segmented Volume - TSV that shows all of the stocks below in the negative, which is a good indicator that the longs are starting to get a bit skittish in their current positions, and will begin looking to take profits in the near future.  [more]

Strange how the market tends to repeat itself in a similar fashion time and time again. Trade Setup Performance Review

August 03, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: ATHN , CHS , F

This is a new feature that I want to start doing, and that is providing for you each week a review of the previous week's trading. Since today's is Tuesday, I will not evaluate the previous 5 trade setups...yet. Instead for this write-up, I will focus only on July 21-27. Each morning I provide daily trade setups, and for the purposes of this exercise, I took the price at the market open that day I issued the stock pick (which typically isn't my preferred time to initiate a trade, personally), and looked at the gains, had I held up until today. For next week, I will provide the performance for July 28 - Aug 3 (today).  [more]

15 Stocks Trading At A Huge Discount

August 02, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: NCTY , SNBC , TBSI.DL

Here's one of your more traditional "Buffett-like" stock screens where you are essentially looking for companies selling well below their book value. Many of these stocks lately have been getting knocked down pretty hard and even some of the more well managed companies are getting extremely cheap relative to their book-price (the value of the company per share, if they were to liquidate all of their assets). The main industries most representative in the list below are 1) Insurance 2) Regional Banks 3) Shipping Companies.  [more]
