NYSE Reversal Indicator

October 30, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

Last week I blew the whistle stating that we could see a reversal signal in the NYSE Reversal Indicator this week. And that is exactly what happened. Every time this has happened this year, we have seen a decent amount of selling enter into the markets. Sometimes lasting as much as seven weeks before the bulls finally gained some traction. I lightened my load up quite a bit by covering my short position in the S&P Ultra Short (SDS) at yesterday's close. I also tightened my stop-losses in AAPL and DTV, and will not hesitate to take profits in all my long positions next week if the reversal does indeed happen. Just remember, that this week was the first time in seven weeks that the S&P finished the week in the negative which also coincides with the reversal signal.  [more]

Market Wrap-Up 10/28

October 28, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

The market continues to fake-out everyone. If the market is up, before the market closes, it will be down, and when the market is down, it will ultimately be up. It's frustrating for people on both sides of the trade. The trading range continues to tighten and eventually that will lead to a major breakout or breakdown in the market. Ultimately, I believe it leads to a breakout. The bears have given me little reason to believe they are going to change the direction of this market in the near term. They are going to have to put together a few days of straight selling and stop the give and take we seem to stuck in. The bulls over the past two months have managed to push this market higher and until that changes, I will focus my efforts to the long side.  [more]

28 Stocks Ready For A Short Squeeze

October 28, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: NTRI , PTIE , KRE

Below is a list of small-cap stocks that have been heavily shorted by the street, and should the market continue to rally, these stocks could see their  share price launch into the stratosphere (if they haven't begun so already) because of the bears being forced to cover their short positions in the stock. Based on the number of shares that are being borrowed, for some of these stocks, it could take as many as 55-60 days to cover all the shares held short in the individual stock.

If you don't know what a short squeeze is, that is where a stock starts to rise rapidly, and as the trend continues to escalate, the short sellers will likely want out. For example, say a stock rises 5% in one day, those with short positions may be forced to liquidate and cover their position by purchasing the stock. If enough short sellers buy back the stock, the price is pushed even higher.  [more]

Trade Setup Performance Review

October 27, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: ANV , SNDA.DL , RMD

With the choppiness that we have seen of late in this market, it is somewhat difficult to pocket any significant amount of gains in any one stock, unless you are playing earnings (which is a roll of the dice at best). Overall though, this week's performance review has turned out quite nice. Though you will never get the optimal amount of profits, there was, nonetheless, plenty of opportunity to profit in between. The best trade by far was the short  in Allied Nevada Gold which is currently up 10% with 18% optimal profit. On the long side SNDA has seems to be finding some buying interest.   [more]

Unlike any of my other screens, this screen focuses on stocks trading under $10/share, and has a market cap of around $1 billion or less. As for the variables that I used in the screen, I focused on fundamentals, particularly companies that have a healthy balance sheet with little debt to speak of, with a strong prospect for rapid sales and growth in earnings, as well.

Now be aware, that these kinds of stocks carry huge risks to them. A simple downgrade, news event, or missed earnings target, can derail these small-cap stocks in a heart beat. But if you have some capital that you want to roll the dice with, these stocks will give you a good start in your research.  [more]

I've provided for you below a chart on the S&P 500, looking at the intraday movement from the past 10 days using 30 minute candles. At the very least the bears managed to push the markets just a shade below yesterday's highs, even though they were broken on an intraday basis. Daily Trade Setup Performance Review

October 20, 2010 – Comments (0)

After two stellar weeks of stock picks, I finally have some not-so-great results on the daily trade setups. A number of them were stopped out early on due to some significant whipsaw action we saw in the market. However almost everyone of them had a profit opportunity to them, its just that we have had some major moves in both directions over the past week or so, and as a result those gains are easily lost in the market chaos. One thing that I may do for next week is start highlighting the profit potential as well as the current profit/loss the stock is experiencing. That way you get two different perspectives, where a good dose of stock management would allow for you to be more profitable than not in these setups.   [more]

Potential Pullback In the Short-Term?

Here's some food for the fodder - S&P creeps outside of the upper Bollinger Band, and typically when that happens we see a pullback in the short-term. So is today's rally into unfamiliar territory a sign that we may be over extended in the very-near-term? I'm not sure, but I did hedge my portfolio, thereby reducing my long exposure from 80% down to 25%. However, I'm sticking with it for now - my stop is pretty tight, and don't need to tighten it any further at this point. Overall on the day, I am up about 1.7% which is a bit ahead of the market returns. October 13, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: AGCO , KLIC , TCBI

After a week where we had a 44% gainer in one of our long plays (HNR), and both the long and short setups were net positive, the bar was set pretty high for this week's performance. However, there is nothing shabby about this week's results, as both the long setups outperformed the short setups by a 4-to-1 margin - EXCELLENT!!! I didn't have a short setup on 10/6, as I didn't like the action I was seeing in MEDQ (the short pick I had originally posted that day), yet nonetheless, it would have been a profitable trade had I kept the position posted.   [more]

20 Stocks Ready For A Short Squeeze

October 12, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: RSYS , COBZ , MINI

Below are a list of small-cap stocks that have been heavily shorted by the street, and should the market continue to rally, these stocks could see their  share price launch into the stratosphere (if they haven't begun so already) because of the bears being forced to cover their short positions in the stock. Based on the number of shares that are being borrowed, for some of these stocks, it could take as many as 55-60 days to cover all the shares held short in the individual stock.

Of all the stocks listed below, I am intrigued by RSYS as a breakout candidate, and may be tempted to put a position on with it. Others to watch is MINI which is forming a cup and handle pattern, and also watch for COBZ if it can break the long-term downtrend it is currently stuck in (close to doing so).   [more]

Despite repeated attempts to break through 1156, the bears simply have not found the muster to really put the fear of God in the buyers. Instead, we continue to see the market catch a bid every time at 1156. Today's bounce, if it holds, would greatly demoralize the bears cause. After a pretty solid week, bracketed by two significant moves on Tuesday and Friday, the market heads into a new week having made new highs on this latest uptrend, and poised to move even higher. While we are getting close to one of those "reversal-signals" on the NYSE Reversal Indicator, we are not there yet, as the lines have not crossed, which could be a good sign there is still some fuel left in the bull's tank. Some Quick Thoughts On Today's Market Action

October 06, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: CRM , NFLX , BIDU

I am not overly surprised at today's market action. At one point I was down about 1/2 percent, but managed to recover and finish slightly in the positive on the day, and when I say slightly, I'm talking by a razor-thin margin. One disturbing situation though was the heavy selling in the Nasdaq, which far out paced the returns we saw in the Dow, S&P and Russell. But when you dissect the market action, there was some heavy losses in a handful of stocks that likely can be linked to the overall losses of the Nasdaq - in particular, I am talking about Salesforce.com (CRM) down 7.9%, Baidu (BIDU) which was down 4.2%, and the market darling and Netflix (NFLX) down 3.8%. All of these stocks have seen some of the best rallies out of the entire market this year, and today's selling in those names could probably be contributed to nothing more than profit-taking at this point.   [more]

This market has been on one heck of a rally, and recently, as of yesterday, broke through some pretty significant resistance levels. I'm sure though that there are some out there that are a bit hesitant about getting to aggressive with their long positions. As a result you might be looking for those stocks that doesn't see a lot of volatility and won't fall through the floor, should this market make a turn downward.  A good compromise is to look for those stocks that are dependable, stable, collect a respectable dividend and hold their value at the same time.  [more]

Once again, we had another good news report received like rotten eggs by The Street today in the form of Pending Home Sales. Though it beat expectations, the market sold-off and never looked back. This furthers the paradigm, that the market is not looking to satisfy the bulls or bears, but to inflict the most amount of pain, on the most amount of people. The bears no doubt were given a few rays of hope today, and will look for follow through tomorrow, but so often has been the case that these sell-offs are quickly bought up by investors. And unlike other sell-offs or late, we've seen enough consolidation prior to today's market action, that we are quickly nearing oversold territory on a number of indicators in the short-term.  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

October 02, 2010 – Comments (0)

From a market standpoint, we didn't move much last week, but on a day-to-day basis the whipsaws the market experienced was something to marvel at. Examining the market as a whole, there still really isn't much reason to be bearish on this market, and after Friday's decent rally, there still seems to be a lot of bullish momentum left in this market to propel it even higher - at least in short-term. As for the NYSE Reversal indicator below, we are at the peak of the range, indicating that this rally is starting to mature, but there is no stochastics cross over yet, and as a result I wouldn't start taking profits too quickly. There very well could be a good week or two still before we see any significant pullback in the market.

What a week it has been, I think I came away with whip-lash due to all the market reversals that we saw. What was good news was bad news (GDP, Jobs, Consumer Sentiment) and what was bad news was good news (Consumer Confidence). That is why you shouldn't get too wrapped up in what the numbers are vs. expectations (even though I do provide them), instead you should focus more on the reaction to them, and what its says about the overall market conditions.

Despite the early morning sell-off, the bulls showed they still have some gas in the tank, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them ramp this market up even higher next week.  [more]
