Trading Gaps

December 31, 2010 – Comments (0)

Breakaway Gap Here we see a nice consolidation and finally the buying becomes strong enough to gap the price up.  From there we see a nice run.  This gap takes a non-trending stock and moves it to a trending stock.  As a confirmation of the breakaway gap we want a nice spike in volume.

The island reversal is bit of a rare pattern so when it happens it makes a strong signal to trade on.  A gap is created, it moves to sideways trading, and then it gaps in the other direction and continues to trend that direction.    [more]

Long SCSS At $9.38

December 29, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SCSS

It initially broke out and I was late to the party. I fought the urge to chase, and I did a good job at that. Instead I waited for SCSS to come back down to the breakout level of $9.38, which it ultimately did. But my, hindsight 20/20 is a killer, and there was definitely a better entry to be had. The only thing I could have done differently, is with it coming back down off of its intraday highs at $9.48, I probably should have waited for it to settle first before jumping in. However, the breakout is still intact, though, for obvious reasons, I'd like to see it reclaim that $9.38 level before the close.   [more]

How I Use Bollinger Bands

December 28, 2010 – Comments (1)

I am always using bollinger bands, especially when it comes to taking profits. It is a good way to manage my 'euphoria' or excitement when a stock is going up (or down) in my favor. Its easy to assume that it will continue in that direction in the midst of the trade. That's why I use bollinger bands to guard against those emotions, and avoid the common "profit-turn-loss" scenario. I've put together a video that you can view here.   [more]

18 Lottery Stocks Under $10

December 28, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: WEN , DRYS , LLNW

Unlike any of my other screens, this screen focuses on stocks trading under $10/share, and have a market cap of around $1 billion or less. As for the variables that I used in the screen, I focused on fundamentals, particularly companies that have a healthy balance sheet with little debt to speak of, with a strong prospect for rapid sales and growth in earnings, as well.

Now be aware, that these kinds of stocks carry huge risks to them. A simple downgrade, news event, or missed earnings target, can derail these small-cap stocks in a heart beat. But if you have some capital that you want to roll the dice with, these stocks will give you a good start in your research.  [more]

25 Stocks Prime For Shorting

December 27, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: HOTT , JWN , TZOO

The screen below are for those stocks that have primarily been on a solid uptrend of late, but are starting to show signs of breaking down along with a loss of interest by the street as a whole. So if you are looking to short this recent market rally, use the list below as bit of a primer to get your bearish energies flowing. Most of these stocks look pretty good when just looking at price and volume from a long-term perspective, however, what is concerning is some of the glaring bearish divergences that are popping up. One such indicator is the Time Segmented Volume - TSV that shows all of the stocks below in the negative, which is a good indicator that the longs are starting to get a bit skittish in their current positions, and are taking profits as a result.  [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

December 26, 2010 – Comments (1)

This is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to gauge the health of the markets, and whether it is setup for a run higher, or whether there is weakness on the horizon. As it stands right now, the market is prime to continue its march upwards, which means that we're likely to see a move into the 1270's and possibly in the low 1300's. Of course that is pure speculation, and I'll have to let price confirm that move for me, but as it stands right now, I have no desire or reason to be loading up on short positions in this market.   [more]

A Quick Check Up On The S&P

December 22, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

I've provided below a quick snapshot of the hourly chart of the S&P for the month of December, and as you can see, we are trading in a very nice channel, and of late, we are magnetized to that bottom trendline. This isn't overly concerning to me, due to the lack of major, large-scale rallies, like we saw earlier in the month. A break or significant sell-off that takes up below this trendline though, may be good reason to start tightening the stop-losses on your positions or even take some positions off the table to lessen your exposure.  [more]

19 Stocks Ready For A Short Squeeze

December 17, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: CALM , JAKK , GDOT

Below are a list of small-cap stocks that have been heavily shorted by the street, and should the market continue to rally, these stocks could see their  share price launch into the stratosphere (if they haven't begun so already) because of the bears being forced to cover their short positions in the stock. Based on the number of shares that are being borrowed, for some of these stocks, it could take as many as 50-70 days to cover all the shares held short in the individual stock.

If you don't know what a short squeeze is, that is where a stock starts to rise rapidly, and as the trend continues to escalate, the short sellers will likely want out. For example, say a stock rises 5% in one day, those with short positions may be forced to liquidate and cover their position by purchasing the stock. If enough short sellers buy back the stock, the price is pushed even higher.  [more]

Simple Swing Trading Strategy with RSI(2)

December 11, 2010 – Comments (0)

In this article, I want to share with you all a simple swing trading strategy that I learned and customized to my own trading style. I have found this strategy to be quite accurate if executed correctly. Even though the potential reward might not be high but the time duration the trader has to hold the stock is very short to recognize profits and move on to the next trade. Another advantage is that stop loss can be placed right below the low of the entry day and therefore incur a very low risk entry.  [more]

A lot of these stocks are positioned for breakouts in the near future. Those stocks from this list that look the best to me are SONO, OWW, WCN, ALGN, RSG, and AIT  [more]

10 Highest Dividend Stocks

December 09, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: NLY , SCD , CYS

You'll find that the stocks below are sporting some pretty nice dividends, but don't just dive into one of the stocks listed below without doing first the necessary due diligence required. With the recent market rally, a lot of dividends have been diluted due to price appreciation, so the best strategy going forward is to watch these stocks and wait for a pullback in the ones that you are targeting specifically before putting any capital to work.  [more]

11 Stocks The Street Is Shorting

December 08, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: TX , AZK.DL2 , SB

Here are 11 stocks that the street is continuing to get more and more bearish on over the past few months. Their short interest has continued to rapidly increase against their historical norms, and should be the leaders to the downside if we see some selling in the days and weeks ahead.  [more]

Long NFLX At $185.43

December 08, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: NFLX

I've seen a lot of these high-flying stocks, like NFLX, and others sell-off hard due to rumors about a CEO (i.e. Steve Jobs and Apple) or a resignation by another corporate executive (like what we have today with NFLX), only to see the stock quickly rebound within a few days or even the same day. That is why I got into NFLX which happened to pull back nicely to its current trendline and the 20-day moving average as well. My stop is a lot wider than I typically  put on a trade, but I will be aggressively tightening it at every opportunity.    [more]

S&P At A Glance

December 07, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

Its been a weird day to say the least, the market has shown little incentive to rally after its impressive open, instead it is doing anything it can in its power to push below the 1227 level on the S&P. So far it is holding the level, but with the end of day trading now in full swing, I'm not going to rule anything out from the realm of possibilities. I do think it is worth noting that we broke out of a nicely formed wedge on the S&P e-mini futures, which is definitely a positive catalyst for the markets, but if we close below 1227, then all bets are off.  [more]

17 Stocks that are Breaking Down

December 07, 2010 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: ASH , BBY , KEY

Stocks across the board have seen huge increases across the board over the past week, I thought an interesting scan today would be to find those stocks that are going against the tide, especially useful if there is to be any profit-taking in the days ahead. So what I did, is run a scan of stocks starting to breakdown. The stocks below are showing signs of, or already in the process of, breaking down as the smart money appears to be leaving them in a subtle manner. There are stocks trading at its peak and finally showing some vulnerability, while on the other extreme, there are stocks that have been in a channel near or at their lows, before finally breaking down below those lows.  [more]

Long ESV @ $50.75

December 07, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: ESV

We've seen some weakness since the open - in fact there has been little incentive from the market to build on the day's open. Right now, 1227 stands as the support level to watch for. If we break it, and close underneath the price level, I believe it greatly diminishes the euphoria behind this rally (and not just today's), and would be reason for me to go into capital protection mode.   [more]

10 Lottery Stocks Under $10

December 06, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: ARIA , GMXRQ.DL , INFN

[more]

Long ATVI At $12.24

Can't say I am overly thrilled about where I chose to enter in this trade (hindsight 20/20 is always a stinker), but I still believe the trade is still intact, despite my overzealous nature at times to get in trades earlier than I should. The chart is worth checking out, and perhaps you can benefit off of a much better entry.   [more]

NYSE Reversal Indicator

December 04, 2010 – Comments (0)

Last week's rally was impressive, and it nearly instantly changed the mood on Wall Street from capital protection, to capital expansion. Now the bulls have control of the market, and while there may be some profit taking in the days ahead, the bulls clearly have the advantage and will look to continue pushing this market up through the end of this year and in to next.   [more]

Weekly Market Wrap-Up

December 03, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

This week has probably been one of the wildest weeks of the year for the market. There is a lot of positive momentum building in this market that should spill into next year. I've gone ahead and put together a weekly market wrap-up video recaping what we saw this week, and then looking ahead to next week, and how things may unfold, by dissecting the hourly, daily and weekly charts on the S&P.   [more]

The Daily Long and Short Setup

December 03, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: GOOGL , SYNA

Market has managed, quite well, to keep a bad employment number, which jumped from 9.6% all the way up to 9.8%, from driving the markets lower. In fact the action that we saw today is actually a good testament to the health of the market. While I think we may see some profit taking in the days ahead, I think overall, the market is going to move higher before the end of the year is out.  [more]

24 Defensive Stock Plays

December 03, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: CHT , MCD , NKE

Some of you may be getting a bit nervous about holding on to a lot of high-flying stocks after the rally that we've seen over the past couple of days, and your concerns are warranted - over time the market never goes straight up, and since Wednesday, that is exactly what's happened, with little in the way of a give-back by the bulls. So I've provided below a list of stocks that are more defensive than growth oriented. These are stocks that shouldn't see a lot of volatility and won't fall through the floor, should this market experience some profit-taking. In essence, these stocks represent a good balance of companies that are dependable, stable, collect a respectable dividend and hold their value all at the same time.  [more]

S&P Should See A Pullback In the Days Ahead

December 03, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: SPY

S&P has been on a tear of late and will likely see the gains continue to pile on going forward. However, the market is over extended in the very near-term, and stocks simply do not go up over time the way that they have over the past two days. With that said, I think that early  next week you could see some sort of profit taking creep in - not a lot, but enough to keep the bulls honest. When that happens, that is when you will want to add new positions to the portfolio. Remember typical rallies, over time are marked with higher highs and higher lows - what we have seen over the past couple of days is nothing but new highs.   [more]
